The giant Tokyo fishmarket, Tsukiji in Japanese, is for me one of the wonders of this world. I love the sea, I love fish, and to be in Tsukiji at 4:30 a.m.to watch the auction of tunas, see the crates full of freshly boiled violet octopus, watch restaurant-owners choosing their fish and finishing off the morning in a sushi-restaurant on the market-ground, were some of my most memorable activities while I lived in Tokyo. My good friend Momose, owner of a small restaurant, who taught me Japanese and how to prepare fish, took me there more than once. He is in the first picture. The others are various scenes in the market-halls, where there are tons of fish, but no fishy smell, only the smell of the sea.
