A while ago I had the idea that some optical modification may allow "a lens" to achieve a Trioplan-like bokeh performance.

So I did some calculations and finally came up with some lens modification.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

What do you think, was it worth it?

(I won't release details until I have done more testing of that idea with various other lenses...)

In my opinion YES proceed, I have to know how when you have completed your thesis.Regards Smile

That looks very interesting!

Interesting, indeed - the Bokeh looks Trioplan-like!
How is sharpness changed by this modification?
Due to the form of the flower and the size of the second photo it's a bit difficult for me to see that.

Bokeh looks good but I'd like to see a 100% crop for sharpness.

Just missed out on an actual 100/2.8 trioplan :/ that bokeh looks lovely.

Looks good to me.

I say definitely go ahead with this as too many people are paying too much money for Trioplans.

I also had an idea for creating bright outlines on out of focus highlights but I bet your idea is different!

Sharpness is "somewhat acceptable" (for me), at infinity ...

and closeup:

(all shot fully open at f2.8 )

Poor optical engineers, years of study and calculations to come out with a corrected lens and then... Laughing

Anyway, yes, experimenting is always good.

I would say sharpness is a lot better than Trioplan wide open Wink

Yes, I was joking, I'm more than happy with the sharpness and performamce of it!

Sharpness looks much better than Trioplan, indeed. It could be a more useful lens than the Trioplan is.
If "a lens" means a lot of lenses then this modification could become very popular. Congrats!

Well, it is quite easy to foresee what will happen. Someone grabs the idea, most likely in China and mass produces that. Crying or Very sad

If it's your idea, and it turns out that it works, then go and have it mass-produced yourself i'd say!

Keep up the good work, i guess there is a market for an item/part/filter that can turn "a lens" into a Trioplan bokeh-clone!

I know this project is going to work out. It has to. After all I just recently, finally, acquired a Trioplan myself.

Hello Klaus, at the moment I do not see the typical Trioplan bokeh with much brighter borders here. Do you have such images too?

Diaplan 100mm f/2.8 (Trioplans cheaper sister)

To get the soap bubble bokeh I took an old idea into praxis:

This was made with a modified Helios 44, which is now very Trioplan 100 like.
