The Kodak 1A with Cooke Series II Aviar 4.5/5.25" in Compur which arrived today is a rather impressive folder camera, here it is alongside my Ikonta A:

The light was already bad, but I succeeded in taking a few test photos with the Aviar mounted on my 5D, all shots at the full f/4.5 aperture, no contrast adjustment.

Here is a completely unsharpened crop (note: 5D shots ought to always be sharpened!):

and the same crop after very slight sharpening:

Another crop pair, I had some difficulty focusing at the low light level:

A full frame:

and a crop thereof:

Three more full frames, the last two haven't been sharpened for display:

This copy is from about 1937, uncoated. There is an about one half stop loss due to the eight air-to-glass surfaces so the f/4.5 corresponds roughly to T/5.3 and the contrast is supposed to be rather low due to veiling glare.

This will be a very interesting lens to test properly.

1937 lens on a modern digital camera - that still blows me away

as ever vilva, it is really interesting to read about and see the resulting images from unique combos like these

Now, say: Doesn't this lens look like magic? With all these wheels and screws and things on it. Shocked Wow!
