Hello.

I got a mint Tamron SP 19AH 70-210mm f3.5 for 39€... Smile

I tried it on my 5D² and find it glowing wide open at 210mm. Everything's okay at F8.

Do you confirm it's "normal" for this lens ?

From the MTF data, the lens will have slightly less contrast at 210mm than the 70mm but retains good resolution. You can see photos at the link below.

Olivier. Do you know Tamron SP 19AH cost only $149 in 1984 but the Angenieux 3x70 cost few times more? Wink

Looks to me like the writing is receding out of focus. I can add that if you think you are seeing a halo or coma on a very high contrast subject like this a.) not uncommon b.) don't necessarily blame it all on the lens, the camera may be a factor.

Quick test crops from test pics on my G1 - out of camera jpg's f3.5, 5.6, 8, 11.

Are your pictures taken with Tamron 70-210 f3.5 19AH ?

About the camera above, it's Canon 5D MkII in both cases, with Tamron and Angenieux.

As I see your shutter speed quiet slow on both photo, I suspect the camera shake may caused motion blur on the photos.

It will be valuable to compare them at better better lighting condition. I am curious to know if the Tamron will perform as good as the Angenieux.

I gave it another look - yes, at close range mine is not dissimilar, but I typically use long end at medium/long distances.

Obviously.
Not very good test pics sorry I was just using a bean bag on the car, focus was on the front of the chimney, 1/500th at f.35. But sufficient to say I think no glow, though some PF on a G1

PS: even if results are not improved, clearly I'm happy for the price.
It's a very smooth zoom lens and joy to use.

Here's one off mine on a D800. It's 210mm at f4 not wide open at f3.5 though. (Not noticed much difference) No LoCA correction applied to show normal fringing. I replaced mine with a nikon 80-200mm f2.8, which certainly bettered it, but at a fair cost.

It was a couple years ago or so, and after reading many rave reviews here about the 19AH, I decided I should get one. So I eventually found one for a good price and bought it. But after I bought it, about all I did with it was take a set of test photos, then I put it up in the cabinet, to sit there, waiting for its next outing. Well, this thread was what finally got me to take it out again and give it an exercise. At first I decided to try it out on some flowers that are in bloom. Hyacinths, I think they are. It was a struggle. A slight breeze was blowing, but it was enough to frustrate me in my attempts to focus, especially at f/3.5. I did manage to get a few halfway-presentable images, but they could have been better. Then, after coming back into the house, I spied my cat resting contentedly in a box, and thought I'd give it a try with a flash. At least I wouldn't have to worry about movement with the flash. So I took a set of pics of him. They came out much better. All of the pics were taken at 200mm, mostly because of my philosophy that I want to try a lens out at its weakest -- and for a zoom, that is wide-open at its longest focal length. In this case, f/3.5 at 200mm. Although I did try it out at apertures from f/3.5 to f/16. The shot of the cat at f/3.5 came out dramatically better than the shot of the flowers, despite the advantage of a very fast shutter speed with the flowers.

Okay, following are ten images in two sets of five: F/3.5 - 5.6 - 8 - 11 - 16.

First the flowers, starting with f/3.5. The color of the f/3.5 image came out noticeably different from the others, and I'm not really sure why that is. I went back and shot some more pics of the flower at f/3.5 and they had the same color as the first. Odd. The camera I'm using is a NEX 7 @ ISO 100

The distances were roughly the same. I may have been a foot or so farther from the flowers than the cat. My impressions regarding the 19AH are that it is a very consistent, very sharp lens that handles itself well across the spectrum. At this point, I'm going to assume that it is just as well behaved at infinity and closest focus. I guess those will be my next 19AH projects.

I've asked myself why I haven't used this lens more often, and I guess it's because of another Tamron lens that I own: the 30A SP 80-200/2.8 LD. Whenever I've had the need for this focal range, I've always gone for the 30A. It is a brilliant optic. I guess what I should do is try the both of them against each other. See which comes out on top.

I have this lens. At wide open on 70-135mm sharpness better than 135-210, after is little soft, but generally sharpness is good, for portraits.

Took this shot of a jackdaw yesterday on my 19AH. Handheld, 210mm, f8, pentax K5. The lens' good contrast gives it snappy focus.
PP from RAW, I did have to work a little bit at reducing/removing some PF.
