Always wanted to try push-pull zoom. IQ is nice stopped down, but long side isn't sharp as 70mm. Open wide there are strong CA.
My sample has mechanical issues, focus ring is in friction with metal body and leaves a scratching mark.

This is a very common lens, as is the earlier version, the 80-210 3.8-4, which was made in two versions (03A and 103A). They're all pretty close in performance. If I had to lay a bet, I'd bet on the 70-210 as being better than either of the earlier ones. But they all do a decent job.
My advice is that you just pick up another copy of the lens. They're pretty cheap. eBay is a good place to shop. Or maybe KEH or Robert's Camera. My further advice is, since you're delving into the mysteries of push-pull zooms, that you consider getting a different one. My favorite push-pull Tamron is the 23A SP 60-300 3.8-5.4, which is actually a respectably sharp optic. I've actually sold images taken with that lens. Another strong push-pull contender in the SP line is the 19AH 70-210 f/3.5. _________________ Michael

Being owner of many prime lenses, the 19AH 70-210 f/3.5 is one of two zooms, the other is also push-pull, the Zoom-Nikkor 35-135 f/3.5-4.5. _________________ ☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮ like attracts like! ☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮

Ordered 80-210 (103A) version. It has fungus in front element, but it should be easy to open and clean it. I hope full metal body will act better then metal+plastic construction. |
