This lens certainly does not need another topic on this forum Smile
But here are my samples.

My opinion :
the lens is light, very pleasant to use.
It seems sharp
I find it has some Chromatic Aberations, but nothing really serious.

Even if ratio is not important (1:3,3), macro possibilities are pleasant since the lens is good and easy to handle.

So i confirm it is a really nice lens.

!!! some pictures are available in HiRes, click on picture.

last week at Montmartre (Paris, France)

in HiRes, it is possible to read the book

nice bokeh

sharpness

crop 100% (with Acdsee, may be not as sharp as original jpeg)

Nice samples Nelson!
How does it compare to you other 300mm?

I could not test this lens enough for final opinion.

It think :
- from sharpness point of view : it is as good as TAIR 3S, may be a litlle better. I also got a 670Au Tamron (10-15 years older) and 54B is naturally better.
Tair and 54b are better than my Sigma 70-300APO at 300mm.

- from handling point of view : very fine. (TAIR is not bad, its weight and size counterbalance perfectly the weight of the DSLR. this picture http://323i.e30.free.fr/galerie/TAIR/IMG_3178.JPG was made at 1/125 f4.5 with a lighter 300mm may be i would have move...).

- focus ring is smooth and precise.

- macro possibilities are fine, even if Sigma 70-300APO can reach 1:2 at 300.

I would say :
during holidays, i'll use the sigma AF APO for the Zoom possibilities.

for long photoshooting sessions i'll use 54B for its tiny size and low weigh.

for "fast" pictures on not too long sessions (because of heavy weight), i'll use TAIR.

As i promised some weeks ago, i will do a comparaison 54B-670Au-TAIR 3s-Sigma 70-300 Apo

Having this lens too....
I have compared it with the Sigma APo 70-300 and Tamron SP 60-300.
This prime is by far the best. Wide opened as good as the Sigma APO stopped down 2-3 f-stops and the 60-300 stopped down at least 1 f-stop.
When stopped down none of the zooms came close.

I picked one up with a teleconverter and a fujinon lens for very little the other week but only just tried it out. I've not done direct comparison tests with my Nikkor 300mm 4.5 AIS but it seems very close on first impressions.

Excuse my novice question, but can you add a tripod mount to this little lens? My first instinct says no, but I may be wrong.

Yes, it's the same one as for the 70-210 (non-constant aperture two ring), however it was sold as a separate accessory and doesn't crop up that often.

A comparison of just both Tamron's (54B and 670Au) would be very helpful, thank you, as I've got an oportunity to buy the latter.

Yes.
The Tamron tripod collar fits most if not all the Adaptall range. It is well worth seeking but hard to find as most Tamron owners only have one for all their lenses and (Like me) would never sell it.

Today i practiced a little with 54B.

Definitly i think it is very too soft at 5.6.
I had to close at 8 to get some very pleasant photographs, even with 01F Extender.

ps : i know, my captor is dirty Embarassed

My Tamron sp 300mm was tack sharp at wide open. Seems they have same quality issue as many other lenses too. From all above lenses I kept Tair for me that was best performer even if others good too.

I got my Tamron SP 5,6/300 (54B) from soikka a few days ago. - Thanks again.
Today I went to the zoo to test it, here are my results:

http://forum.mflenses.com/viewtopic,p,197486.html#197486

unsharpened crop @ F8: Yes it`s sharp.

some ca´s @ F5.6 (crop): Not bad at all.

less ca`s @ F8 (crop): Quite usable.

My conclusion:

It`s a good performer even it will never reach the standart of IQ I am used to get from my leica lenses - but thats not surprising.
So if you are searching for a good and very light weight budget tele, get yourself this lens !!!

Timo

The CA looks pretty bad on those samples, but I guess that's the worst case scenario.

Shrek said that UV filters helped cut it down. Maybe you could give these a try.

Excellent samples! thanks for sharing

Definitely not impressed by the CA, but sharpness is ok.
I'll do some more tests on my Helios 300mm F4.5, it also suffers from CA... I haven't touched it much.

Those ca´s are not as bad as they look like, don`t for get I chose the worst case you can get, metal against the sky!
And the samples are 100% crops so in the whole image they are not so easy to find.
By the way removing some ca`s with PS is not a big problem, this is what the F5.6 crop looks like after 30 seconds work with PhotoShop:
