I wondered when I saw a post about Sonnar 2.8/180 mentioning 4 versions. I didn't find this one.
Its serial number says it has been produced between 1964-1967.

I'm really impressed.
Absolutely no CA.
Sharp even wide open at 2.8.
I had to add some contrast but weather was quite grey.
When I looked at the results on the computer screen... Wow...

It's great to see your nice results, esp. the cat's shots.

These older Sonnar models are more constant in optical performance (sharpness) then the later MCed, only contrast is slightly lower. But that can be easilly fixed in PP or during RAW conversion.

Smile I have an older copy what is perform same or almost same than latest Contax edition ... They are very , very good lenses but they are impact also by quality issue what is quiet common with all Eastern European products. I am glad you have a rare good one. I guess this one and the first one is missing from my collection. First one remain a dream I am sure.

While I agree with the sharpness (nice cat shots btw Wink ), I can not agree with the CA comment. This lens does have it's share of axial CA, though it is not necessarily that visible in these images - you can however check some of the bokeh circles which are multicoloured, instead of being single coloured.

Most of the time the axial CA isn't really a big deal, but occasionally, especially in bad light (direct sunlight), it can be a bit problematic.

Anyhow, 180 is a very nice lens - I should use it more often myself. Funny how such a lens doesn't cost more than a hundred euros!

Hi Olivier, congrats for this lens and the pictures. The cat pics are stunning. One of the best I saw until now.

One sentence concerning CA. I own this lens in a MC version. Below a shot (nothing special ) and a crop of the upper part where you can see that CA is not a big problem.

I really like the 2 DOF pictures of the flowers on the grass Very Happy and of course the cats...it is so nice to have other people who like/love cats....in all their beauty.

Can someone advice which will have low CA on 2.8?

I had a 200/2.8 MC sonnar almost 2 years ago but the CA was very bad at 2.8.


Is the 180 better?

I'm especially interested in exakta mount .

my version has exakta mount with adapter to eos. regarding ca see the samples above.

Unfortunately there are CA's there. They dissapear at f4 but what's the point of carrying this heavy lens if you use it at f/4.

Is yours useable at infinity? i remember that mine could not focus past 100 meters.

Lateral CA is not really a problem with most tele-lenses, but especially with older ones axial CA can be. The test image isn't really good for testing the latter.

Sharpness seems to be there Smile

Moira, this is one of our cats. He is a very good testing model and seems to like the camera. I always liked them and they like me either.

About this cat pictures, I shot it very quickly and these 2 shots are the very first I made with the lens, and they're shot through a window.

For sure, I exagerated when I said "absolutely no CA".
I would have better said a lot of less CA than what I observed from other lenses in same conditions. By other lenses, I mean for instance : Taïr 300, Jupiter-21M.
The shot was made facing the light.

Good copy of 180/2.8 has lower CA and better sharpness than typical 200/2.8, but 200/2.8 is significantly less copy-variable.

If you search for MCed Sonnar, take 200/2.8. MCed 180/2.8 are very variable and often perform worse than 200/2.8.

If you don't care about contrast, take old 180/2.8. Olympic (native M42), zebra or this model (it's sometimes called "star wars" model, but I don't know why).

180/2.8 optical formula is typical Sonnar: it has cemented triplet. Zeiss (Bertele) used cemented triplets to enhance contrast (cemented elements = less air/glass surfaces = better contrast), But it was very difficult to manufacture it correctly (one cemented triplet consist of 3 elements, that means 6 glass surfaces + 2 cementations = 8 possibilities of manufacturing defect).

Many triplets were discarded by quality control, so final product was very expensive.

Later, when Zeiss (not only Zeiss, it applies to soviets and their Jupiter-9, too) needed to reduce manufacturing costs, they decided to used even those triplets, which would be discarded as deffective. This is the reason why late lenses consisting of cemented triplets are so variable in optical quality.

With the finding of MC layers, the advantage of cemented triplet design (=contrast) has gone, so true sonnars design were reaplaced by alternative designs (ernostars), which doesn't use the problematic and heavy cemented triplets. The new designs aren't always better, but they were cheaper to manufacture, more constant in optical quality and lighter/smaller. All late "Sonnar" designs aren't in fact true Sonnars, but Ernostars (CZJ 200/2.8, the last model of 300/4, all Zeiss Oberkochen C/Y Sonnars...).
