Small compact with good IQ

Hi folks

My beloved Samsung NV9 has died due to an unfortunate encounter with a pint of Guinness. Sad

So, I'm looking for something else of a similarly small size to take anywhere in a trouser pocket. The NV9 had decent IQ, but I'd like something better.

8mp or 10mp is enough, I find the 14, 16mp on a tiny sensor cameras have poor IQ.

I like wide angles so a 24mm equivalent would be nice, but will settle for a 28mm equivalent.

The ability to record RAW would be a big plus.

And it has to be cheap.

There are so many old compacts that trying to figure out what would suit me is very difficult, so I;m looking for recommendations, the four main criteria are:

small size to fit trouser pocket
good IQ
wide angle lens
RAW recording

not sure if it is small enough for you and if you can find it cheap enough, I'd suggest Ricoh Caplio GX100 or GX200
f2.5-4.4/24-72mm equivalent, 12 MP, RAW, great handling, great outdoor / low ISO shooter, great macro, optional EVF, caveat is high ISO, ISO 400 already quite noisy
the last sentence in the linked review below, quote:
"bottom Line - The Ricoh GX200 is a professional / enthusiast level camera that provides a great combination of quality and performance. The super-wide 3x optical zoom lens, 12-megapixel imager and slew of creative features make this perfect as a small easy to carry alternative to a dSLR in some circumstances. With a MSRP of US$599-$749, depending on the VF kit, it is definitely for someone that is serious about photography."

Take a look in Cash Converters/Generator. 6-8mp cams can be had for peanuts. Some nice Sonys and Panasonics will go for £10 or less.

right, many Sony and Panasonic compacts have zooms starting at either 24 or 25mm equivalent, so do quite a few Samsungs and some Fujis, maybe these lists can help to find the right one:

Nothing like that where I live, sadly, I'm stuck with ebay.

Excellent, cheers, that will help a lot. A wide angle lens is a must have for me.

If you liked the samsung (I find the image quality acceptable but it goes haywire in dark grey spots with chroma noise) maybe try wb500 or wbsomething

Their technical data vary by wb model, wb500 has 24-240

3.5 cm thick fits "yet" into a large pocket

you may even be able to reuse the SLB battery (but depends on model please do research)

Maybe you can get a good price on used one, NV body even cheaper but not as small

I am not endorsing it too much, I just happen to own one and know it has 24-240

most welcome!
when I bought my first digital camera i had chosen a ( used ) Ricoh R3, had preferred it's handling over a few Panasonics which then had been the only compacts to offer zooms starting at 28mm equiv., most then started at 35mm equival.
Now there are many very small, compact superzooms starting at 24 and 25mm mostly using 1/2.33" sensors, bigger bodies but with 1/1.63" sensors Panasonic LX5 and LX7 were top compacts offering RAW, the LX7 with a super fast f1.4-2.3 24-90mm zoom and even a manual focus ring

An excellent camera but hardly pocket size and its heavy and is crap in low light. I had one, loved it and sold it coz of the low light issues.

Ideally, I'd just stick a tiny lens on my old NEX-3 and use that, but even the pancake lenses make it a bit big for the trouser pocket. Same with my NX100, I'd love to have the 2/30 pancake for that, but again, a bit big for the pocket.

RX100 mark iii. It should be cheap enough few years later.

I had been tempted by Mark I and Mark II, they had been leaders in their class, enthusiasts compact with a 1" sensor! And wow, the new Mark III has a 24-70mm equiv. f1.8-2.8 lens, starting from 24mm and faster is much more attractive again than their precedessors 28-100 f1.9-4.9 lens.
Certainly even Mark I has a much newer sensor with much better high ISO performance than my first suggestion Ricoh GX200 and even my later suggestion Panasonic LX7, and even though the Sonys got a bigger sensor they have a smaller body. Just that these' Sonys have not dropped in price like NEXes have Wink
Just as you say Calvin, the Mark III in a few years Wink

RX100 would fit the bill, but it's not cheap in my terms. Smile

I am leaning towards an old Ricoh GR II, 28mm equiv prime lens, excellent IQ, not too big, can be had cheap.

PostPosted: Tue May 20, 2014 4:35 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Pay little more for a GR 3, Ian. You will need the faster lens and better LCD.

I'll keep an eye out for a GRiii, there are a few GRiis on ebay uk, but no GRiiis, I'll keep looking.

good choice Ian, I am sure you would immensly enjoy it's use
the later models have advantages over the prior models but of course usually also will be more costly
a neat article comparing GR1, GR3 and GR4, even including Leica D-Lux 5 and Leica M9, I had once stumbled upon: http://www.photosemantic.co.uk/2013/02/05/ricoh-gr-digital-i-iii-iv-comparison/

Cheers for that article link, judging by that, I'd be quite happy with any of the GRs.

It's a real shame there aren't many compact digitals with prime lenses.

Can anyone suggest any other compacts that have prime lenses?

PostPosted: Tue May 20, 2014 6:04 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Nikon A, Sigma DP or Sony RX1 series are bigger 'compact' camera. Compact digital camera with prime lens are targeted for high end users only.

PostPosted: Tue May 20, 2014 7:21 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Yes, that's an annoying oversight - a reasonably priced prime lens compact. I still have a Sigma DP-1 in bits I should put back together. A ribbon cable inside wore out so the lens wouldn't AF. Really terrible camera, slow, clunky, poorly designed. Great sensor though, the output of the Foveon is wonderful, just a pity Sigma couldn't design a good camera around it.

there aren't many compacts that sport prime lenses. Besides Ricohs the Merrils, yes.
Ricoh has had a long tradition of small, high end 28mm prime lens street shooters. It had started 1996 with the GR1, followed by GR1s and GR1v, of course analog cameras, that had sported a famous 2.8/28 lens that later was also issued as lens only in Leica M mount. There also was the GR 21 with a 3.5/21mm prime lens.
The tradition of 28mm prime lens street shooters continued in the digital age with the Ricoh GRDs. GRDI through IV had a rel. small 1/1.7-inch CCD sensor with 28mm equivalent lenses. Last of the line and last offering of Ricoh with an 28mm equivalent prime lens is the Ricoh GR which now has an APS-C sensor. Nikon A is similar and could be seen as Nikons attempt to take a footing in that Ricoh stronghold.

I agree, it is an oversight that there are no budget prime compacts. Of course one could argue that smartphones are just that.
Talking 'just' cameras, used GRDs will be cheapest. Beware Ricohs handle nice, users get addicted Wink

Canon SD600 has a decent sized sensor for its era and can be had for damn cheap....dont expect good video or high iso out of though

Sony rx is expensive and not folding into pocket. If you consider the sony you can go Samsung RX or NEX as well.

Canon S100/S110: 24-120mm f2-5.9, 1/1.7", 12MP, 200 grams. Smile

With far less also S95, but it starts from 28mm.
