On impulse I bought a Sigma YS 35mm f2.8 Multi Flash Auto lens. It arrived today in near mint condition and appears to be quite unusual in that it has a flash guide number scale around its collar with a locking device on the focusing ring which can lock the lens at various GN settings. Can anybody explain how this works or does anyone know anything about this lens? A search on the internet produced nothing.

First shot taken with this lens on a Canon EOS10D @ f8

Lock it and see what happens to the aperture as you focus.

When you lock it at a particular GN setting it locks the focusing ring.
