Samyang announced a manual 50mm f/1.4 lens for 24x36mm cameras and smaller - to be shown on Photokina!

So there will be likely as well Walimex, Rokinon, Falcon, .. as well with their branded version of this lens.

@500 bucks they can forget it. a lot of 50s are pretty sharp, and MF 50s aren't that expensive. the lens might be good, but I doubt it's gonna be a popular item.

It looks like the price will be in medium hundreds. No matter how good it will turn out to be at this price point I'd expect a chipped lens and automatic aperture a-la Zeiss. The positive, of course, is that vintage lenses will remain unbeatable as far as bang for the buck is concerned.

Probably is is wideopen sharper than most classic 50mm/1.4 lenses. With a modern design with aspherical lens emelent(s) and taking care for the filter and cover glass this likely is possible, even without the retrofocus way Zeiss went with the Otus.

But onion bokeh is likely the price one has to pay for this.

UMC, not USM. No AF.

More info here on Samyang webpages:

http://www.samyang-lens.co.uk/samyang-50mm-f14-umc-lens.html

There are full resolution sample images on the first site. Not bad.

Based on my experience with Samyang, the advantage is probably the sharpness of this lens at wide open is superior to most of other 50mm lenses and they provide most of the popular mounts for convenient uses. However, different from 85/1.4, there are many good 50mm lenses with much cheaper price, so I don't know whether this lens is worthy or not.
I found that in Korea, the Samyang cine lens are so popular among the Koreans, but even second handed lens are still not that cheap.

I love to see comparison images between Samyang 50 and other 50 mm lenses.
I suppose the Samyang to be shaper wideopen than Canon EF 50/1.4, all Nikon 50/1.4, all Zeiss 50/1.4 - all those have no aspherical elements and are stressed Double Gauss designs.

The Sigma Art and Zeiss Otus 55 are likely better - with their new construction far away from normal Double Gauss.
