TOKYO KOGAKU RE GN TOPCOR M 1.4/50

Introduced in 1973, ∅62 filter
"Radioactive"

Cleaned and lubed...
Used with its dedicated hood...

I won't be making large prints out of any of these, but i hope they'll show what this lovely lens can do....
#15 and 16 are completely out of focus from the wind but at least they'll show its bokeh !

Jpegs straight out of the camera

Lens pictures shot with a RE,Auto-Topcor 2,8/35

Thanks for posting, I was wondering what the RE GN was like.

A day at the botanical garden, where i mostly fought with alot of wind ...
I had a hard time nailing my choosen focus point with all the wind but i decided on showing
them anyway so we, at least, get a sense of it's bokeh and color rendering....
This lens as been reported to be very sharp..... guess we'll test it's sharpness another day.....

Straight Jpegs mostly MFD and openned.

A faster shutter speed would help, still looks good in spite of the wind, I've have days like that too, I typically start shooting things that don't move, or landscapes with a slower shutter speed to soften the trees.

More tests.... it's quite sharp WO but i find it's not an easy lens to work with...
Some of my other lenses "feel" easier..... ......it's only an impression i guess....

Hopefuly someone else will show their tests soon...

This lens is mysterious for me because it's a relatively rare lens? I don't see it often in local stores or even ebay.
I saw on the photo above that your copy is in M42 mount is it? I thought Topcor lenses are mostly in Exakta? Or were you able to modify it? What's the original mount for this lens?

Btw is this len made by Cosina like the 58/1.4?

PostPosted: Fri Jun 28, 2013 10:09 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

This lens mount was swapt to M42 from its original Topcon/Exakta mount.
These third party mounts are sold on ebay by a guy in Taiwan who has diminished
the mounts metal quality and precision.... and who dosen't answer complaints...
He'll just lie to you then block you from seeing is sales..... Seller : aking200899 beware.....

This RE GN Topcor 1,4/50 M was made by Topcon, as is the RE, Auto-Topcor 1,4/58. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topcon_RE_Super

The one you're reffering to is a recent copy made by Cosina with the looks of the vintage Topcor's...
I doubt they're the same opticals... but i may be wrong...and they sell for ridiculous prices....

If you look around this forum, you'll find all you need about these marvellous RE, Auto-Topcor's...

Resized Jpegs....

Out of focus... but shows the bokeh...

Just to show the bubbles...

That could be, though it does seem to be harder to find lenses that I must get.

Thanks to Mir for the updated photos and to IAZA for the new ones.

@IAZA. Lensturbo seems to be good. How do you mount the Topcor to the Lensturbo? I means, what about all those Topcor pins?

I use exakta eos on EF Lensturbo. it's not really fit in, but enough for me. just unscrew the disturbing pin Smile

Reading through the "Topcon Story" this "M" version is the only Topcor made with a marking to advertise it has a coating on the lens, though I wonder if it signifies Multicoating?

Would seem logical.....

PostPosted: Sat Jan 17, 2015 12:29 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Yes, the M is for multi-coating. Very evident from the green reflections, very different from other Topcor lenses.

Bought mine new for $99 at the Underground Camera Clearance Center on First Street in Cambridge in 1976 or 1977.

Sharp lens, but not the best bokeh, as IAZA's last photo shows. I've bleached the radioactive element pretty well with UV light, so it's not tea-colored anymore. Had to tear down and re-lubricate the focusing system, any lens with the original lube is frozen by now.
