I would check for haze on internal element.
You should be getting better contrast than this.
Also, are you using a hood? Very important.

thks for u comment. I didnt use a telphoto hood, have to look for one. May be flare comes from internal problem have to check .

Funniliy enough I was just about to start a thread complaining about flare/foggy pics with one of these. This is my lens:

serial 971xxxx. And here's a sample pic:

Even resized the contrast is horrible. Nor was the shot particularly backlit. Using my biggest rubber hood made little difference.
I cleaned the lens a bit when I first got it, it's still rather dusty but I don't see any haze (or fungus) which is usually the cause of a pic like this. I do see the torchlight reflecting internally off the walls of the lens.
What do you think?

It may not be the same lens.
There are at least 6 different Soligor 250mm primes, preset or auto.
And I don't own all of them, so I cant answer for all.

The usual reason for contrast problems like these is haze on an internal element. Sometimes it can be difficult to see.
It is necessary step in initial inspection to shine a bright light from both front and back, as nothing else will be sure to reveal some forms of haze.

Some APS-C and 4/3 cameras seem to be more vulnerable to problems with internal reflections not in the lens but in the camera. Several people here have recommended adding a black paper mask (a rectangular shape) at the mount end of the lens to reduce the projected image circle to block stray light. I believe they may have said this problem is worse with tele lenses.

Hi Marcus,

This one I have seems to be your lens

http://forum.mflenses.com/soligor-tokina-250-4-5-t-mount-t9790,highlight,%2Bsoligor.html

Haven't used it in quite a long time, but I don't recall any contrast problems.
I need to try dig it up.

Luis your remark about baffles reminded me I had come across this web site some time ago (it's in French so I have posted a google translate link):

https://translate.google.co.uk/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.street-photo.fr%2Ffr%2Fmateriel%2F27%2F35&edit-text=

I had in fact acquired a compass cutter for the purpose as well, and this morning some black sticky back felt arrived. So:

update and see this forum discussion
http://forum.fourthirdsphoto.com/threads/57126-Legacy-lens-baffle-size

I stuck the baffle on the end of the t-mount thread on the soligor 250mm, and took a few shots on my G1 to test. These are centre crops, resized to 800px f4.5.

The difference is clear. I am certainly prompted to continue experimenting. I have, first up, put a baffle in my PK to MFT adapter. With my fastest 50mm there was no vignetting, but with the Palinar 300mm there was! That's the trouble, you need baffles customised for each lens really.
Overall I am already fed up with the 250mm and am selling it on!

That's quite a difference indeed.
What camera is that ?
This may be a necessary fix for a lot of lenses on certain cameras.

I have the t4 version of this lens on eBay at the moment. Will pop some samples up later, I was surprised at how well it performs on full frame...

Ah, sorry, missed it, G1.
Possibly this may be a problem with mirrorless.

sometimes it can depend on lensor thickness-stack too:

The earlier pic of the gulls was on my pentax K5. And here are some more quick experimentations (all wide open, OtC from raw, resized):
1. lens only
2. + hood
3. + baffle. Clear vignetting - should enlarge the centre of the baffle. Shutter speed fell one stop.
4. + baffle + hood

BTW I really recommend reading WYSIWYG's contributions to the thread on fourthirdsphoto I posted a link to - distinctions between an aperture stop, field stop and a baffle.
