My Tamron collection and thanks!

Hi to everyone!

I was going to post in the Life on Forum thread but thought maybe best to open a new thread than bump up an old one.

I recently put my Tamron 60-300 on my digital body and was quite surprised how well it performed.
It made me start searching information around the net for the 60-300 and my other Tamron lenses.
This site was a brilliant resource! From what I read, appears the site maybe is no longer maintained and I do hope it survives for sometime yet.
The information here is invaluable and just wanted to say a thanks to all.

To add something of interest besides a thanks, thought I might include the lenses I have.
I photographed the boxes, simply easier than pulling all the lenses out.
These were all purchased new. I've kept everything as new. The lenses are all in perfect (as new) condition.

I was even surprised with the 90mm macro box. It's pictured here and did also contain the boxes the lens and extension tube typically come in. (Not pictured themselves)
The box is more a store presentation box. It has cardboard bits you can fold and put together and a cardboard stand for the lens to turn it into a store display. This kit also included a Tamron water spray and some colored background cards.
I pictured the water spray, came in it's own box and I still have the background cards as well.
I'm kinda pleased I kept it. I know it's not worth $$$ but it's just good to have the 90mm lens all original and complete.

The 300mm came in a soft case. I was surprised to notice others photos showed a hard case.

It's great to see the old manual lenses alive and being used! I contemplated selling all my Tamrons at one stage. I would be kicking myself today if I did it!

Welcome mate!

Its a bit odd... from my understanding you are not supposed to be able to post an image in your first post on the forum. Does anyone know if this policy have changed?

That is a splendid collection of Tamron lenses Congrats!

And they are fine lenses optically, no question of that.

For me, and probably only for me, I have had bad luck with some of my Tamron lenses because they for reason unknown seem to be more prone to fungus than are my other lenses. So it goes. Sad

Thanks for the welcome! Obviously not here long enough to know about any policies but can tell you the pic was linked externally. It wasn't uploaded to the site here as I see there is an option for that. Maybe the upload directly method doesn't work?

Thanks! Yep, already found it via this forum as well. Like 1 small

Thanks! I started photography with some of these using a Ricoh KR-10M camera. It was a blast acquiring each one as I got more into the hobby.

It's worth mentioning I have always kept silica gel with any lenses when not in use. Silica gel is boxed with them and my camera bag always has silica gel. I've never experienced any fungus on my Tamrons or other lenses.
My friend had the Tamron 70-210 same as mine above. He had his for a very short time and left it stored in his closet with no silica gel. In no time at all it was covered in fungus.

No idea obviously how you've kept yours. You would also think glass is glass and a Tamron lens shouldn't really be more prone to fungus than any other brand but who knows, I'm no fungus specialist either. I'd always recommend using silica gel. These lenses are obviously old now and there certainly have been no adverse affects.

Yes, I started off with Tamron SP Adaptall-2s. I still have them all. I think the only one I bought new was the 90mm. It took me years to track down a 400mm, which I have scarcely used.

If you are tempted to purchase a 24-48mm make sure you get the rarer hood, which is the only way of attaching a filter.

That's a lovely set of lenses, Mr. Green I've got a bunch of Tamrons, but it's a random bunch.

I have quite a lot of adaptall Tamrons but only the 60-300 and the 90mm (albeit the first 52B not the second 52bb) match. Or maybe the TC as well mine is the 01F

A good way to keep MFlenses going is to contribute posts such as yours. Thanks for sharing your wonderful collection!

Edit:
I forgot to mention you should have one more Adaptall: The 03B 135mm f/2.5. Smile

Nice post with an interesting twist -- showing the boxes instead of the lenses.

I have most of your Tamrons, plus quite a few more. The ones you show that I don't have are the 70-210 and the 28mm. But I do have the SP 70-210 f/3.5 and the SP 80-200 f/2.8 LD, which are nicer than that 70-210, I believe.

My first Tamron, which I bought new in 1985 or 1986, was the SP 60-300. I used that lens a LOT. It and my Vivitar Series 1 28-90 were my two go-to lenses and made for a compact walking around kit that fulfilled most needs. When I bought that 60-300, it was an expensive lens. Even deep discount, it was over $300. But it was worth it. I got some fantastic pics with it. I own two now and still use them with my film and digital cameras on occasion.

My second Tamron was the 300mm f/2.8 LDIF. An amazing optic, I found it to be just as good as the Nikon and Canon equivalents. 3rd was the 90mm macro, which I bought used for cheap. But it was, and still is, one of the best macro lenses I've ever owned. And I own quite a few. When I got bit by the MF acquisition bug about 12 years ago, I started picking up Tamrons whenever I could. So I now have an almost complete collection of SPs, plus that 24/2.5, which I think should also be an SP lens because of its excellent performance.

Fortunately, I haven't had a problem with fungus with my Tamrons, or any of my lenses. I keep them stored in a glass cabinet in my man cave, and my house has central air which keeps the home humidity at a fairly constant 50%.

Thanks again to everyone for the replies!

If it helps anyone looking to buy some of these lenses and they want a photo of any particular lens, let me know and I'll get a photo up.
As I said, all the lenses were purchased new and everything is still totally original so if someone wants to just see what lens cap came with a particular lens etc I can post a pic.
I know some people are interested in things like this.

It appears these Tamron lenses can still perform brilliantly well on modern gear.
That you can get them so cheap today is awesome.

I'll post a little info on my 300mm f2.8 below. It's obviously a highlight lens so will show one thing I found to look out for.

Yes, I have the same and it is pictured on the 300mm below.

Please, so far things have been cheap, I've only be researching the lenses I already own.
Don't let me start looking at lenses I do not own. Mr. Green

You have an excellent collection!

My 70-210 is the interesting one. I know it's cheap and not the greatest performer. I bought it as a dispensable lens. I intended to have it in the car glove-box with a second camera.
I was going to use it for shooting around waves and the ocean, anywhere I may likely damage my gear.
I never did any of that. To be honest, I'm not even certain it has ever had a pic taken with it. I think this lens is still brand new, unused.
The 300mm you mentioned, I'll comment on it below. Totally agree with you.

Below is my 300mm. It came with pictured soft case.
The issue is the little velvet pads can come off and leave the metal studs that hold the strap to the soft case exposed.
These then rub on the lens. I mentioned earlier my lenses were all perfect, then realized this was the only imperfection.
I went out one time using this case and you can see a small area of the lens hood got a little scuffed around the B3 lettering.
Looks a little worse in the pic than what it is. Anyhow, it's something to be aware of. I never used the case again.

The 300mm itself, still use it today. Brilliant lens and I have never felt a better or more silky smooth manual focusing action. It is pure perfection imo.
If you are considering this type of lens and it's within your price range, it's soooo worth picking one up!

Here is an example taken with Tamron 300mm with 2x tele wide open at f2.8. (f5.6 factoring in 2x tele)

Took it hand held at 1/800 on a 24mp camera at ISO 1600.
Below is the full image and a 1000x1000px crop.
It's a jpeg straight from the camera.
There were no adjustments or sharpening applied.

Even wide open with 2x tele, the results are certainly usable imo.
If you stop down to f8, by that stage you get great results without really needing to do anything!

I also decided to add in a crop with quick sharpening applied.
If it was a critical image and you spent some time on it, possible to get really decent quality results.

Worth mentioning, the corner darkening in the top corners and slightly across the middle at top, they are all shadow areas not lens flaws.

I used my 300mm at a religious parade in Spain and someone shouted "Paparazzi!" in my direction. There is no greater complement for my poser credentials!

Haha, funny you mention this.
I was walking around the city shortly after Princess Diana died with the 300mm.
Some guy from a car shouted out, "You killed Diana!"
He was only joking and for those who don't know, the paparazzi were given huge blame for her death in those early months after.

Not complete derail of the thread but I am a 24mm enthusiast and wonder how the Tamron behaves compared to the Sigma 2,8 which I own and is quite nice. Photodo rates the Sigma higher than the Tamron and Adaptall-org recognizes that the Tamron is inferior to main brand lenses...
But I sold my Minolta 24 and my Canon FD when I started using the Sigma. So I like to be surprised.

As a dabbler across various systems I love the Adaptall concept and there are certainly plenty of good ones in the range. I certainly won't part with my 24-48 or 90/2.5.

Ricon, cool -- you have the latest SP 300/2.8, the black one. Mine's the sort of olive green colored one. I know there's a slight difference between the two, but I wonder if, in real world circumstances, the differences really matter. Interesting however that yours came with a bag. Mine came with a hard case and a 1.4 TC.

Lumens, I disagree with the adaptall-2 site's comments regarding the 24/2.5. I have a Nikkor 24/2.8 AIs that I tested mine against. Wide open, the Tamron showed trace amounts of a sort of blooming flare with white subjects, whereas the Nikon didn't. But once stopped down to f/5.6 all traces of the flare were gone and the Tamron was noticeably sharper than the Nikkor.

Sorry, can't resist -- gotta add a couple taken with my 300/2.8 and Sony NEX 7. A little bit of motorcycle racing going on. Only mistake I made with the side pans, I should have been shooting with a shutter speed of about 1/125 instead of whatever it was (I had the camera set to aperture priority). All photos were taken at ISO 100 with the lens wide open at f/2.8.

The hard case imo is the MUCH better option. Looking at some internet pics, I think the 360B came with it initially as well but they must've changed it later on to cut costs.
Your 60B I think is the best looking 300mm of any manufacturer. This was the 300mm in Tamron's lineup that I really wanted. By the time I could afford one, the 360B was the current model.
The 60B also came with 1.4x TC as standard. The 360B no longer included it and I'm quite sure it also can't be used on the 360B, you have to go with the 2x TC.

24mm I always thought produced really great results.

Not without a mod. The problem is the rear bafffle. What is baffling is why tamron made it like this. However a quick trim does the trick. More info here:

Yeah, I was aware of this. There's a guy on eBay selling one right now with a 1.4x and mentions he modded it.

This is still my primary 300mm f/2.8. And as you say, it is sooo silky smooth. I also own the 60B (and 63B), niether of which have the same feel. It's truly perfect. Takes but a pinky to adjust, yet stays where you want it. It really is perfect. And the IQ is excellent. Love it! Nice sample you have!

Thanks for the sample comment.

Great to read someone totally enjoying this lens as I do. The Tamron 300mm focusing ring is perfection.
