Panasonic DMC-G1
Carl Zeis Planar 50/1.8
Lumix G Vario 14-45/3.5-5.6 at 45

The difference between a standard zoom and a fixed focal, is usually pro-zoom versatility by having wide, normal and tele without transitions.. a few more f-stops and surely better optical quality for the fixed. Many kit zoom are despised by many people... Are they really that bad?

The comparison is impossible and almost absurd, but I had fun doing it. I used f/5.6 in all pictures (this is a painful 14-45 Pana limitation at 45mm), manual focus, aperture priority, no stabilization, exposure times selected by camera (sorry, this is a real home test), unedited direct JPG... start the scuffle!

I have been thinking of testing my much maligned kit zooms too against a few well known and trusted lenses. I have an 18-55 on both Nikons and my NEX5.

Back to yours. If I didnt know which was which and was asked to pick the best picture, I would have picked no 1, no 4 and no 5. I think the focus may be off on no 6 thats why number 5. Looking at the full size pics, there is little difference. In my opinion, there's not much in it. The kit zoom is a superb lens.

It would be interesting to see how the kit zoom performed in AF (which it was designed for) vs manual focused Planar.

Well done.

Which Planar is it?
