Great results Ian, it looks like a very capable lens.

I bought the Minolta AF 28-85mm f3.5-4.5 c/w Minolta 505si Super on your recommendation as my walkabout film camera and it makes a superb combination - the lens is first class. The complete kit cost me £40 in near mint condition! Very Happy

Cheers fellas.

I couldn't pick a favourite between the 28-85 and 35-105, they are different lenses in many ways but equally good.

That lens loves the light we have been enjoying. Great stuff.

the 35-105 is better. any lens that starts at 35-xx is always good, probably because they're easier to make.

But that's just it, the 28-85 matches the 35-105 in all regards, it might even be sightly superior in microcontrast. The 35-105 is slightly better in it's macro performance because the macro setting is at the 105 end and with the 28-85 the macro is at the 28mm end; conversely, the 28-85 focuses faster with much less hunting. So as I say, they are equally good but have different characteristics.

I'm an alpha shooter, the rating on the original 35-105 is higher than the 28-85 on dyxum board, and I would have to agree.

I own a lot of minolta/alpha lens, the 35-105 is a wicked lens, on par with some of the pro zooms (f/2.8 ), and even better than old sigma/tamron f/2.8 zoom at similar aperture. The only issue is MDF is really really bad... better than the 28-85, better than the 24-85, it's close to my 18-135, and the sony 18-135 is a very good lens.

I can only speak for the copies I own, but my 28-85 matches my 35-105 and I couldn't chose between them in IQ terms, on colour film, I think I slightly prefer the 28-85, it has just a little more pop.
