I do not have the 2,5/125 APO-Lanthar, but only 2-3 hours of photo excercise made it clear why paid macro work needs lenses like it. I think so because I learned the hard way especially at widest apertures how longitudinal and lateral CA is a serious menace when you start lighting products. LaCA and LoCA is bigger problem than dust, scratches and dents on subjects I think. Out-of-focus highlight rendering is also quite important, more important than "normal" bokeh, with shiny parts of products.
These are all are very lightly Photoshopped, though looks in some photos like lots of postprocessing. Less time in Photoshop = better profit margin Lens used for all photos is Nikkor 60/2.8G AF-S focused manually on a D3 with standard viewfinder (great for MF). I used two SB-800 flashes to light the camera gear, triggered with SU-800 wireless remote.
I hope I didn't set them too low-key, they show up good on my calibrated monitor but not all monitors show shades of black and grey as well.

Glad that you liked them, I was first thinking if these are overdone but then thought pornography is cheesy and overdone to deliver the message clearly and brutally.
I also think the Zeiss folding rangefinder looks best. Good balance in the image and all components needed are there, including brand logo in not too big role.
In January I will know if these got me the macro shoot assignment. What products is it? It's going to be very cool gear porno: RC engines! |
