I've owned numerous portrait length lenses including the Pancolar and the 85mm f/1.9 Super-Tak and 85mm f/1.9 Super-Multi-Coated Tak. Of all of these I consider the 80mm f/1.8 Pancolar the best. Mechanically it's worst though, but the lens is surprisingly easy to service.
In the end I preferred the look of my even older 83mm f/1.9 Takumar over anything else, so I sold off everything including the Pancolar because I'm more of a user and not a collector. |
I think Peter's summation is pretty good. He is right about the mechanical shortcomings of the Pancolar, sadly. Jena lenses of the late period suffered from less than ideal mechanical aspects, sadly.
I think the point about which one suited him most is very valid, it is better to chose based on one's personal tastes than abstract concepts of better or worse, all the lenses we are discussing here are good ones that will do the job well, so personal taste becomes a major deciding factor. _________________ I don't care who designed it, who made it or what country it comes from - I just enjoy using it! |

Spotmatic's judgement weighs. The Pancolar you already have, I hope and wish that the S.Tak will give you some photos you like, it has done it for me _________________ my photos on flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/kuuan/collections |

I think you did a good deal. This lens will keep its value if you look after it. _________________ Playing with digital cameras is fun.

OK, first a caveat - chasing grandchildren can be a difficult proposition with a MF lens - so what better way to slow them down than a game of pretend hospital.
Of course the outside shots happened later in the day.

Which one, the older Auto-Takumar first model (1960-1963) or the newer second model SMC Takumar (1972-1976)?
Mine is the version in between.
If you have the older one then it's pretty much the same as it has the same optical construction; 5L/4G. If it's the newest or second one, then it's supposed to be the slightly better one with a different optical construction (6L/6G).
I would be curios to see a comparison between the two different optical constructions. _________________ Thomas Bernardy
