I try magic lantern on my 5D2
some samples with the contax 60:2.8 in my garden
handheld under windy and cloudy weather
it is a funny game, you have to put the red dots where you want the focus

Guys, the Magic Lantern poilu talks about is a firmware hack for 5D Mark II
And, poilu, really impressive images, quasi medium format quality!

great macro works.. and yes magic lantern is add on firmware to help focusing. I understand why Orio said hack. there's warning that it can harm your camera. I never tried it when I use Canon.

Yes, great results.

Perhaps you can explain a little bit more Poilu how it works. As far as I know this additional firmware is more for cinematography features.

magic lantern is a hack who add features to Canon dslr
in the begin, it was for video features like audio control, zebras for luminosity or setup for blue screen
as it is open source, many features have been added and it is interesting also for photography
a stable version is available for free, with a small donation you can access beta version
this soft will certainly be improved, magic lantern is even able to defish and preview the samyang 8mm in real time
if you can, give a small donation to help developers

magic lantern boot from the compact flash, if the CF is not prepared, the dslr work normally
if you don't use the latest betas, nothing can go wrong
if something should block, just remove the battery to reset everything

my macros test the focus peak mode
the window zoom mode or Canon 5x-10x mode are more precise than the peak mode
but if you want more than 1 zone in focus, you need a tripod otherwise focusing 1 zone will put the others zone oof
with peak mode you can see what is in focus for the whole screen
it is not precise as optical manual focusing but it is more accessible to non trained photographers
also work at F11 and more is a challenge with OVF if the lens doesn't have coupled aperture
focusing with peak mode is like flying on instrument vs visual
zone in focus turn red but sometimes slightly oof also turn red or focused don't turn red if there is not enough sharp edges
you will still miss shots but it is a nice addon to have

for non macro use, it will work better a wide aperture, otherwise you get red dots everywhere
the zoom window is more practical, you frame all the subject and use the zoom to focus the head

this kind of pic is more easy with peak than zoom window

Those are really good Poilu. How long did it take you to learn ML?

PostPosted: Thu Mar 15, 2012 3:40 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

thanks Ron!
I am quite good with new technologies but I never read manual
when I try the intervalometer, it took a pic every second and I could not stop it
I switched off the 5DII but when I switch it on, it continue to take pic every second
I still don't understand which button to push but opening the CF card stop it
also to program most values, you have to enter a submenu with the button 'style'
a quick jump in the manual and I found all my answers
it is a well made soft and it even have the manual with graphics available on the 5DII lcd
someone less in a hurry than me should have no problem at all

There was a Magic Lantern talk/demo given recently at Linuxtag in Berlin, it was recorded and the video can be seen here http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6962.0

Some people will find it easier to watch a demonstration video rather than read through a written manual, me included.
I bought a 5D Mark ll last week and this video helped me better understand how Magic Lantern works.
