I got a Kalimar 35-70/3.5 just prior to going on vacation & ended up using it most of the time because the focal range seemed right most of the time. However when we got home I was disappointed with the image quality when viewed on the computer. I decided that I would like a similar lens with better IQ & had a look on the net to see what I could find. I discovered a camera shop in Toronto selling off new old stock that had been purchased from another store closing up & I made the trip to check it out. I took my camera & the Kalimar lens with me so I could do comparative shots.
I tested the Kalimar against a Vivitar 28-85/3.5-4.5 & a Soligor 35-70/3.5-4.5, shooting all three @ 70mm FL & f3.5 (wide open).
1. Kalimar
2. Vivitar
3. Soligor
I was expecting the Vivitar to be best but it had poorer IQ than the Kalimar. I bought the Soligor, new in box for $23. _________________ Ron

Nice, Soligors are often under rated, I also find many of my Soligors to be very good _________________ Lars | Manuellfokus.no |

Wow, the soligor really pops. Typically I've found that the shorter range zooms or 'framing' zooms as some like to call them are actually very good performers. I imagine it is easier to optimize image quality for these, from an engineering standpoint. |

My vivitar 28-85 was a pleasant surprise as it was made by Kobori "77" which was supposed to be inferior to Kiron etc _________________ Canon A1, AV1, T70 & T90, EOS 300 and EOS300v, Chinon CE and CP-7M. Hmm... If you want a really nice bargain 35-70 lens, try Olympus Zuiko 35-70/3.6. It's very, very good, and can be had inexpensively. It's a parfocal design, too, meaning the focus point stays throughout the zoom range. Not quite as contrasty as the Contax Vario-Sonnar 35-70/3.4, but costs 1/3 the price of said Zeiss. _________________ List of lenses |

Hmmm, performance of that Vivitar sucks. Sure there's no haze or fungus on the glass? I love a lot of Vivitar primes, but I've got mixed experiences with Vivitar zoomlenses. Anyway, yesterday I've won a Vivitar 70-150/3.8 on Ebay, which supposedly is pretty good. |

If you want a top quality 35/70 at minimal price, look at the vivitar 35/70 3.5 one touch (made by komine 28xxx)
I made in 1985/1986 a comparative test of both viv 35/70 3.5 - constant aperture - and Zuiko 35/70 3.6
Quality is SAME except on 35mm full aperture where zuiko is better
At all other focals/aperture combinaisons, quality is same

I do not know which Viv it was but it was new in box. The Soligor SN 59***** in PK mount is made in Korea according to the box but no origin on the lens. _________________ Ron
