While the nFD 5.6/300mm IF is, of course, 2/3 EV slower, it is a much better "allround/budget" 300mm lens.

If you've got more budget-friendly gems like the nFD300/5.6 in mind, feel free to share...

I think I've been mentioning the most obvious excellent budget lenses before:

* Minolta MC/MD 3.5/28mm [5/5]
* Minolta MC/MD 2.8/35mm [5/5]
* Minolta MD 4/75-150mm
* Minolta MC/MD 4/200mm (earlier, bigger & heavier version)

* Canon nFD 4.5/70-150mm
* Canon FD/nFD 2.8/100mm
* Canon nFD 4/200mm IF
* Canon nFD 5.6/300mm IF

These two are very good and very cheap, at least here in Swotzerland:
* Tamron 3.5-4.5/35-70mm (Model 09A)
* Tamron SP 3.5/70-210mm (Model 19AH)

All these lenses give very good results on 24MP FF cameras, compared to other lenses from that time (and sometimes even compared to expensive modern lenses: The Minolta 2.8/35mm is as good as the expensive Sony/Zeiss FE 2.8/35mm).

I have chosen these samples from my own experience (nearly 500 lenses).

Actually quite a few other MF lenses are very good and available at reasonable prices.

Why this one? I have it as wel as its sibling 28/2.8 [5/5] and though I haven't made any side by side comparisons yet, I think there's not much difference in image quality and if there is, the f/2.8 might perhaps be a little better. Or am I wrong?

Image quality of 1975-1985 primes from large manufacturers is usually very good. Differences between them can only be detected by carefully comparing them under controled conditions. That may explain why you are right ("no visible differences in everyday photography") and i'm right as well (visible differences when comparing lenses directly)!

In fact, i have compared numerous f=28mm and f=35mm Minolta primes carefully and under controlled conditions, using 24MP and 42MP Full Frame cameras, and there are differences Wink

Boris, I PM'd you about the MD 300 4.5. Just making sure you got it...the PM system on this site is a little clunky. Smile Like 1 small

The MD 300 4,5 is pretty wonderful operationally with its internal focusing and portable weight. Smooth focus action. Mine, like the norm it would seem, doesn't sharpen up a lot between 4,5 and 5,6. There's a big jump at f/8 and for that it would be a decent sunshine lens..except that color..it doesn't look funny in any way, in good condition, but the color cast of the shot is a slight brown/yellow phenomenon that I don't like one bit.

Here are my tests:

Minolta MD 300mm F4.5
Canon FD 300mm F5.6 s.c
Canon FD 300mm F4.0 s.s.c.
Top half is centre, bottom half is corner.

I'm wondering if the Canon nFD 300mm F5.6 is a lot better than the Canon FD 300mm F5.6 s.c

The performance of the Canon FD 300mm F4.0 s.s.c. seems particularly good, even in the corners
