After accidentally stumbling upon Zenitar ME1 with square aperture, I got curious about other manual-focus lenses that have unusual shape of aperture when partly stopped down, more specifically - star-shaped or polygonal.

These are the ones I know:

Industar 61L/Z 50/2.8 - hexagram
Volna-9 50/2.8 - hexagram
Super Multi Coated Bellows Takimar 100/4 - octagram

What are the other lenses You know about with star-shaped aperture (when partly stopped down)?

Alex

Almost all of Vivitar's Tokina-made T4 lenses have eight blades and most exhibit octograms (some TX lenses are also like this). My Vivitar 35mm f/2.8 T4 with its 8 short blades displays an octogram until completely stopped down to f/16.

The 100/4 bellows Takumar has star shaped aperture, between approximately /f11 and f/5.6.

Lots of the old Kino made Soligor lenses have star formations too, usually the longer lenses.

How about Komura - this one the 105/2.5.

A vivitar TX 28 had this:

but it stopped focusing; I think someone had taken it apart and put back together not quite right, as my second copy doesn't show that star pattern. BAH, I liked it.

So that is how the ninja star aperture looks like. I do have one of those in Hanimex Wide-auto 35/2.8 lens.

The Komura lens looks very interesting, Woodrim!

Thank You all
Alex

Yeah.. the TX lenses are kind of funny. I have an identical 28mm f/2.5 which has a normal (in fact, somewhat rounded) diaphragm.

My dense Schneider Betavaron 3,5...11/0.08 (50-125/4) enlarger zoom has aperture settings marked 1-2-3-4-5. At A1 it's circular; at A2 it's pentagonal; at A3,A4,A5 it's a nice 5-point star, visible in the bokeh. At A4,A5 (about f/11-22 depending on focal length) there isn't much bokeh, but the specular highlights are quite starry.

I also have a cheap toy camera, a Diana-clone Akira TC-002 with a 50/5.6 New Optical Lens that I'll adapt to Pentax (when I can find it in my junk pile), which IIRC has a dirt-simple iris, just a blade that partially blocks the light path, giving a distorted triangular aperture. Funky monkey indeed.

Does that get visible in the bokeh these lenses produce?

May I ask you Alex, why you are asking that?

I have the same question as You, Klaus, hence want to find some lenses to try it out.

Hi!

The Canon FL 35 2.5 has a hexagonal aperture. Not star-shaped, but kind of pretty anyway. I'll find an odd-shaped one to show. Here's the Canon:

When there are bright OOF highlights, of course. You'll get star-shaped blur discs, just like you get hexagons/octagons/etc. with most regular manual lenses. When there are no strong highlights in the bokeh, the aperture shape will make very little difference.

This one has a star-shaped aperture - or at least its a round aperture with "points"

The shape does show in out of focus highlights sometimes - one of the sample shots has a perfect case.

with the vivitar I showed above, I wanted to catch the flare shape from the aperture

Three of the Asahi Pentax lenses have this star-shaped diaphragm from ~f/5.6-11 -- the first M42 version of the Macro-Takumar and the two M42 Bellows-Takumars.

Versions with the star-shape diaphragm:

Macro-Takumar 1:4 50mm 1:1 (M42)
Bellows-Takumar 1:4 100mm (M42)
S-M-C Bellows-Takumar 1:4 100mm (M42)

These versions DO NOT have the star-shaped diaphragm:

S-M-C Macro-Takumar 1:4 50mm 1:2 (M42)
S-M-C Macro-Takumar 1:4 100mm (M42)
SMC Bellows-Takumar (K)

As I recall, the Contax Zeiss 85/1.2 anniversary edition also has ninja star aperture. Please confirm Smile
