Best budget zoom wide angle

Many times folks asked for best budget 28mm wide angle lens, and there are plenty answers. Perhaps one does not need necessarily search for a prime wide angle. I bet there are cheap manual focus zooms covering sharp and contrasty wide angle with proper full frame edges coverage. Any suggestion?

None of those I've tried are as good as a good 28mm prime and most vintage zooms are pretty mediocre to begin with.

Pentax or Tamron 28-50mm are good. I don't have the Olympus 28-48mm F4 but that will be comparable I guess. I also have a Vivitar (Komine made) and Sigma in the range. They probably tie, but not as good as the Pentax or Tamron. Less contrast, more flare. Other third party lenses are probably not better than Vivitar and Sigma.

Both the Tamron and Vivitar 24-48 mm are pretty good. I'd say that the Vivitar has better contrast (but, on the flip side, it's larger/heavier than the Tamron).

The 24-48 Tamron needs its hood, otherwise performance suffers.

I've got a Sigma Aspherical 24-70mm f3.5 / 5.6 sitting on my desk at the moment that I bought years ago from another dealer at a Camera Fair, it was in their box of crap for £5. The lens was a horrible sticky mess but it cleaned up nicely and is still good. The lens was actually perfect under the sticky goo. It's in Contax Yashica mount and is the widest lens in that mount I have - so I would keep it just for that. But, it's actually a remarkably good lens that I use when I take my CY Mount Planar 50 / 1.7 out, it covers the other lengths I might want.

There are many other wide zooms that are good, Tamron in particular made many. But there are equally as many stinkers. This Sigma is however a bit of a sleeper.

I've always been happy with my M42-mount Sigma Zoom-Ɣ f/3.5-4 21-35mm … maybe I'm easily pleased Wink

Mine's followed me around since the '80's … getting a new lease of life during my current film "renaissance" on my Spotmatic Wink

Good legacy zooms encompassing 28mm do exist, but budget? - none that I know of. And they all need stopping down a bit to match the better budget fixed 28mm lenses.

The three that I have personally had good experience with were of limited zoom range, and had the 28mm somewhere in the middle:

- Minolta MD-III 24-50/4
- Minolta MD-III 24-35/3.5
- Tokina AT-X 24-40/2.8

My experience with The Minolta MD-III 28-85/3.5-4.5 is also good.

AFAIK, none of those are "budget" due to them being sought after and not too common...

EDIT: added the 28-85 as well

The wider they go, the less 'budget' they tend to be. Best bang for buck are probably some 35-70mm lenses. All the Pentax-m and Pentax-a series 35-70mm's are excellent. Same goes for Tamron Adaptall-2 lenses in that range.

The best I've tried so far is the Nikon AF 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5D. It's actually AF but because of its aperture ring very usable as MF lens.

It ticks many boxes: very sharp, compact, 9 bladed aperture, great sunstars, very flare resistant. I will upload some images soon.

nobody has mentioned the Cosina 17-35mm

I'm happy with th Tokina SD 28-70 3.5 - 4.5 But yes it only starts at 28. There is the 25-50 but with mixed reviews.

Yes, I would agree with this from my experience too.
There are some good zooms that start at 28mm, but most wider than that are a bit ordinary.
The problem is that almost all wider zooms these days are not "Budget" priced any more.
As has already been mentioned, the Tamron SP 24-48 and the Vivitar S1 24-48 are pretty good, the Vivitar being huge in size by comparison to the Tamron.
A little longer and the Vivitar (Komine) 28-90 is very good, as is the Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 28-85.
Of these, the Vivitar 28-90 is probably the only one that might still be a bargain

It is worth looking at the Tamron 28-70mm as well. Those adaptal-2's almost never disappoint http://www.adaptall-2.com/lenses/44A.html

Some great suggestions there, thank you. Did anyone tried them side by side? 28mm prime and 28mm zoom? I still refuse to believe zoom cannot match prime.

In looking for the Tamron AF/MF 28-105mm f2.8 from the late 90s, which turns out a bit expensive, I came across a Tamron AF 28-105mm f4-5.6, which is reviewed fairly well

https://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/tamron-af-if-28-105mm-f4-5-6.html

But there is a speed compromise.

I am seeing these go for <£40

It would be interesting to see how it compares to some favourites.

I've just looked down my list...
Tom's just mentioned the excellent Vivitar S1 24-48 / 3.8, It's a big lump of glass, but very good. Also the S1 28-90 / 2.8 3.5 Which is one of my favourite lenses ( I think I have one for sale ? ) Two lenses really worth looking out for.

The Vivitar S1 35-85 / 2.8 is a lens I didn't like, I've had two and sold them both.

In my for sale box...
Soligor CD Macro 24-45 / 3.5 4.5 it's not a bad lens, but it's not really good either.

Chinon MC 35-100 / 3.5 4.5. it's ok, but very average.

Tokina SD Macro 28-70 / 3.5 4.5 Not bad at all, it's on a Chinon CP7 at the moment.

Sigma 24-70 / 3.5 4.5 Good lens CY mount.

Minolta Rokkor 35-70 / 4 Not the Macro lens, but really good. One of the best zooms in this class.

Pentax A 28-80 / 3.5 4.5 a very good lens, I think I have two.

My Tamrons are -
07A 59A 44A 27A 17A 01A all of these are good lenses, some better than others - the 01A is probably the best.

As long as it is the SMC Pentax-A I agree The non-smc and Takumar-A are rather mediocre. They were the budget offerings. I had a hard time finding the SMC, but I did. It is a very good lens.

i was after this lens so did a lot of research years ago.. the Tamron 28-105 f2.8 was not very sharp and very soft at F2,8 but the older 35-105F2,8 was ok

Tamron SP Adaptall-2 28-135mm 1:4-4.5 28A Also a great performer (and a big and heavy and F4 but it takes great images).

There are likely to be zooms at 28mm which might match some primes, but there will be a couple of caveats with that.
Firstly the zooms are unlikely to be bargain priced, and secondly the primes are likely to not be amongst the better 28mm lenses available.
Even in modern lenses where the price is, by comparison, high - primes normally have the edge over zooms, even if some reviews might say otherwise - but we are not looking at bargains here.
Take for example the Sigma Art series. There is a marvellous 24mm f1.4. and there is the splendid 24-105.
Outstanding lenses both, but no bargains, and at 24mm the zoom limps at the edges where the prime is much better.
Older zooms are a very mixed bag, from dreadful to quite good.
To find one that excels, is in good shape, and is a bargain is ..... well..... difficult

how wide is wide?

the canon fd 28-85/4 has excellent reputation, which is indeed well deserved (having come from canon ef, and having worked with the 16-35 mk1, I was VERY critical about canon, because the 16-35 is THE WORST LENS I ever tested. that said, it's reported to be better than the 17-4o, which in turn is very cheap, so maybe just what you're after).
their 35-7o and 35-1o5 fd are also great.
the 28-55 is inferior, as is the 2o-35.

sigma 12-24 looks solid (but boring)
