I got a Zenit E and a Palar 135/2.8 lens from Freecycle (yes -free!) a couple of years ago. I had never heard of Palar before, but I quite like the lens.

I cant remember the exact aperture but it would have been f8 or f11. Not pin sharp (possibly a little camera shake too), but it is acceptable up to A4 print size.

Anyone know anything about them?

I've seen Palar lenses from time to time, not sure who made them. A pic of yours and we should be able to identify it.

Shot reminds me of the common Korean 2.8/135 that appears under so many brands - Mirage, Exaktar etc etc, I have had two or three copies, it's a good lens, I gave my last one to a friend recently as he was sick of the wretched performance of his Canon telephoto zoom and he loves it.

There's a Palar 2.8/35 on ebay for pennies now:

I have seen this lens in other brands as well, might have even owned one at some point.

Sadly, 35mm lenses are not like 135mms in that with 135s they are all good, 35mms can be bloody awful, I have had 4 or 5 really garbage ones.

Hastily taken on a digital superzoom compact (the pencil is there because at the first attempt it rolled off the table and I just caught it):

The iris is six blades and sort of banana loop shaped.

The engraving looks a lot like some automatic Sankyo made lenses often found in YS mount.
But the rubber grip is typical of the later 1970's, and by that time there were a lot of almost anonymous makers in the business, so who knows.

I had the same but mine was labeled as "Weltblick".
It's a good lens and usually very cheap. I paid about 9€ for mine.
Mine had a stiff focus, relubing wasn't successful and so it ended up as party donor Very Happy

I guessed it was made Cosina but I have no real clue.

"Weltblick" was brand of lenses which were sold by big West-German Catalog Company ("Neckermann") exactly like Revue camera stuff/lenses which were sold by another big West-German Catalog Company ("Quelle") and they didn't produce any lenses of their own. They relabaled mostly cheap lower- and middle class Pentacon, Meyer-Optik, Cosina and Enna-München lenses- and camera stuff but also other brands.

EDIT: Some links with pic of the Weltblick labaled version:

I've got that 2.8/35 badged as a Porst. I'm hoping it's not too bad.

From your information, I would be guessing Cosina, too, as it is made in Japan.
