A question. How good are Mamiya/Sekor lenses?

A question. How good are Mamiya/Sekor lens? I am collecting the Vivitar chrome nose lens and believe there will be no 50mm one out there. Back in the day(Days of my youth) the camera makers provided a 50mm or close number lens with a new camera, so the after market lens makers did not always build the "Normal" lens when making a lens set. But the Mamiya/ Sekor lens in 50mm is a chrome nose (Well some are anyway) and I am thinking of adding it to finish up the chrome nose collection.
So! How good are they?

Mine I believe is very good. I have the 55mm f/1.4 with chrome nose. Again, I'll point you to my gallery of pictures from that lens.

They do have a very good reputation. The fact that they look a lot like your chrome nose Vivitars may have something to do with Ponder and Best being the importer of both Mamiya/Sekor and Vivitar. Maybe you can spin the name ring out of a Vivitar 50 and use it on the Mamiya!

The SX series are very nice; the rest are about average. Note that Rolleinar MC lenses were actually Mamiya SX lenses, rebadged and repackaged with Rollei QBM mount.

Are the SX's Chrome Nosed?

PostPosted: Mon Aug 23, 2010 3:16 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Nope, the SX's aren't chrome nosed.

They also tend to be hard to use on DSLR's because, though the mount is M42, they have an overhanging lip on the aperture ring.

What you want is an "auto mamiya/sekor"

These came with or without chrome nose.

The cheapest and easiest to find probably is the 50/2

Big Dawg,

Yashinon-(I'm not certain who makes it for them )also has several Auto-Yashinon 50mm (f1.4 DX,plus some other apertures) Their older "J" cameras also carry the 50mm -chrome nose and body-these are supposed to be good-which may be up your alley. They pop up on ebay frequently.

Here's what it looks like-

The black ring is a filter in the second image.
.

I got rid of it as part of a "downsizing" move last year-which I regret, but not for long because I replaced it with the all black Auto Yashinon DSM 50mm f1.4.

Mine is the AUTO mamiya/sekor ( spelt just like that with the "auto" in caps) It has a slight chrome ring/edge on the front...if that counts Very Happy

Nice looking lenses, these Chrome Yashinons, but it looks like the mirror of a 5D will crash into that rear element (at/near infinity focus):

(not my pic, taken from an ebay object)

Some of you are not concerned with that of course. Rolling Eyes

I suppose you are right on mentioning the canons problems with the mirror hitting some lenses but I should make mention I use the Pentax K200D and I think BD uses the K-7,not sure what camera Kathmandu uses and I am unaware of any mirror hitting with the Pentax's (?)
The Auto mamiya is a straight M42 mount but I am unsure if there is a difference with the SX Mamiya mount?
As for the Yashicas well I don't have one yet Very Happy

I'll have a '71 Camera 35 test of a Mamiya Sekor 55/1.8 ES lens tomorrow for you... the thing is ultra SHARP in the center - from 3.8 on... peaks at 96 at f/4 and 5.6, but the corners are less so - 68 and 5.6 and 8... where a Canon FE 50/1.4 peaks at 88/80- at 5.6 and 8, and a SMC Takumar gets 80/72 between 4 and f/11.

To me this says a couple of things - the Mamiya of the era was optimized for center resolution, and/or had more field curvature than the Canon and Takumar.

I'll link the review here tomorrow AM.

Yes, Calvin, that is exactly what my lens looks like. No, 80022 Here are a couple of pictures from it, although I did enhance the bokeh on the second...

Damn, that chrome 1.4 55 looks good... I'd been hankering after a chrome Yashinon DX just because I have the chrome 35 and 135, but the M/S looks even better...

just grabbed a auto mamiya/sekor sx 21mm f4
very very nice
I only had a night to play with but so far its looking quite good.
Here is a extreme corner crop at 100 percent!

No PP except for minor sharpening on LR. It was also taken in a dark room at F8, so the exposure time was 10 seconds!

As I said, SX series are very nice. Earlier versions can be hit or miss (Mamiya didn't build all of its early lenses by the way, some were subcontracted; SX series were made by Mamiya itself, as far as I know).

One SX at least was made by Tokina - the 90-230/4.5 two-touch zoom. That one was also made as a TX mount for Vivitar.

Not bad at all, but what will the corners look like on full-frame... Wink

Image looks good. I especially like the home made tube amplifier. I am guessing you are a male living alone somewhere in the US.
