Just got this baby today. Its quite soft wide open ( but the bokeh glows nicely!) but at 5.6 up its very, very sharp.

Some test shots on a 40D.

This shot of the flower is wide open

I like the look of the second shot. Quite filmish.

I have three versions of this lens - all are great. It is one of Nikon's classics and is well worth owning. The f2 / f1.8 is also great. I must admit to having a particular soft spot for the early pre AI versions of both lenses which handle black and white especially well.

OK so its the AI version, starting serial 394001, revised optical formulation (7 elements in 6 groups) compared to the previous (pre-AI) Nikkor-S.C version (7 elements in 5 groups).
