Was: Some comparisons, Nikon 50mm E and Nikkor-S.C 50mm
Richard kindly included a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 E when he sent me the 300mm. Its significantly smaller and lighter than my Nikkor-S.C 50mm f/1.4.
Initial quick tests were not favourable - low contrast, hazy, easily flaring. However, I later got a Nikon HN-7 hood (originally for the 85m, so a good size for 50mm on a crop cam). This seemed to affect the results quite a bit, while using it on my Nikkor-S.c made a much more subtle difference.
Today at lunch I took some comparison shots, with the hood, and the results were not bad at all (images link to flickr which has larger versions). First a street scene (actually the pizzeria where I was eating)
Nikon D40, Nikon 50mm f/1.8 E with HN-7 hood @ ISO 200, f/8, 1/400s.
Nikon D40, Nikkor-S.C 50mm f/1.4 with HN-7 hood @ ISO 200, f/8, 1/200s
Now looking up, to catch the facade against an overcast, bright sky. These are landscape so smaller to avoid infringing the 900 wide rule.
Nikon D40, Nikon 50mm f/1.8 E with HN-7 hood @ ISO 200, f/8, 1/640s
Nikon D40, Nikkor-S.C 50mm f/1.4 with HN-7 hood @ ISO 200, f/8, 1/640s
The lighting was a bit variable and I was not using a tripod, so these are not controlled tests, but do show the 50 E to be capable once care is taken with flare. _________________ Camera (ˈkæ mə rə), n. Device for taking pictures in bright light

Yes, that would have been better. Someone on flickr, who takes street shots with a 200mm lens, notes that this focal length places him out of 'slapping range'. Maybe I need more confidence in my street photography. _________________ Camera (ˈkæ mə rə), n. Device for taking pictures in bright light

I found street photography to be all about confidence. If you can take close up shots of people without seeming like your doing anything wrong they often are more agreeable. If you are that worried about it, ask, engage in conversation first. Most won't pose but they'll continue on with what they were doing which I find the best thing. And even if they are mad and react unfavorably sometimes it makes for an interesting shot. Getting genuine sheer anger out of a model is tough. To capture someone's rage is beautiful and just as viable as any expression in studio work such as happiness or the ever-popular contemplative look. Now don't take me wrong, I would never intentionally get someone angry and I would back away immediately if I sensed that, but some people tend to overreact and very suddenly also. So always have a neck strap and a firm grip. haha |

Yes a hood is the way to go - the basic optics are the same as the 50mm 1.8 ais and AF but only single coated. It's got amongst the lowest distortion of any Nikon 50mm and very high resolution but like the 100mm E suffers if left in the nude! _________________ Richard

Could you have a bad Nikon 50mm f/1.8 E series?
I have had one for many years and find it so good I even stick it on my Pentax. It is better than the Takumar f1.8 55mm and f1.7 50mm but only just as they are very good lenses as well.
I have a few 20 x 16 inch prints from 35mm film done with the series E and different Nikon cameras.
I have never seen any report saying the 50mm E series is a poor lens. It is the same optical design as the normal Nikon f1.8 50mm.
The construction looks/feels poor but mine has seen a fair amount of use with no problem. _________________ Pentax K10D & K100D. Many Tamron Adaptall SP lenses, Fujinon f4.5 400mm. A loved Lens Baby 2, Lubitel triplet +++ and many film cameras. Mainly a Digital user inc G5, GR2

This is basically true for all E series lenses, I don't remember for any negative critics about them . _________________ -------------------------------

I agree that they both use a 6 elements/5groups design, which looks very similar. I don't know if the optical formulation is identical.
