A small comparison of photos from Kodak 14N and 14NX (after replacing the sensor and electronics with the one from SLR/N (SLR/C).

I checked ISO 160 as the lowest because this is where the Sensor in 14NX starts, while 14N starts at 80. However, ISO 400 is maximum at 14N for the full resolution of 14mpix (ISO 800 only for 6mpix), while 14NX has no limits and can be used up to 1600. That's why I compared cameras at ISO 400 and I can already see a significant advantage of 14NX, i.e. less noise.

Interesting and skillful project!

Off topic: where do you get batteries for these, I have a SLR/c with max capacity about 4 pictures.

To clarify, I didn't replace the sensor myself - it was a Kodak program that, for $1,499, allowed 14n owners to change the sensor and electronics to make it similar to the new Kodak SLR/N (SLR/C) models.

If anyone is interested, you can easily increase the RAM buffer memory from 256 to 512MB in the Kodak 14N by adding a regular SO-DIMM from a notebook (probably old SD RAM).

I gave up on the canon-mount Kodak after frustration by its 400ASA "noise border" even though the Kodak program for developing the snaps gave far more appealing results than using photoshop. The only slight annoyance was that Kodaks raw format was not easily read by my superior altap.cz "salamander" file manager (=MC in the Linux world). The battery needed attention and exercise, but did stay alive enough even in Norwegian winters. When changing to Canons machines, the noise disappeared, but manual focussing did not become easier, even when changing screens.

AF-confirm light works with manual lenses too but I never been sure if it is accurate?

I installed Canon AE-focusing screen but do not know if works better.

I never use anything but my own judgement of focus, so the light is uniteresting. When I replaced the Canon with a Nikon Z i found its enlargement function most helpful, provided that the randomly moving focus and spot metering point stayed put.

I received one disassembled original battery from Kodak 14n but unfortunately the cells were unsoldered and it was not noted anywhere where the plus and minus of the cell is. Does anyone have an idea how to check this?

Mine is slightly different, not original Kodak.

The one on the side of red cord is probably ground?

so the red cable is "BM"? (connected where the plus/minus of both cells connects)
As for the +/- cell connections, which is which? Is the one next to the red cable the minus of the cell?

both the red cable and the connection besides it are connected to the metal case of the cells, that is why I thought they were ground (well that is how they are with cars anyways Smile )

My DCS SLR/c still works. Quite Zen-style photosession. You can take about 5 pictures before battery is empty and rawtherapee 5.7 (on Mac High Sierra) you can edit and export the picture but not save it. Contax Distagon 35/2.8 lens.

Isn't the problem with these smart batteries that you need to reset the electronics in the battery?

Many of these smart batteries I am aware of the electronics go into a dead fail-safe mode if it sees the cells being tampered with (or indeed if one of the cell voltages drops below the safe discharge voltage for Lithium cells, i.e. at the end-of-life of the battery).

Usually a reset-code needs to be communicated to the battery electronics as a form of certification that the new cells have been installed by qualified service personnel.

This is because charging Lithium-chemistry rechargeable cells is a safety-critical operation; they are not as forgiving as Nickel-based rechargeable battery chemistry.

Reminds me of my Nikon D1, which is 25 years old.

Remarkably, the Minolta Dynax 7D - my second type of DSLRs which is 21 years old - still works flawlessly ...

NOT AS A PHOTOGRAPHER, BUT AS A CHEMIST:
LITHIUM CELLS ARE INHERENTLY DANGEROUS IF NOT PROPERLY CHARGED / DISCHARGED.

A few things (by no means comprehensve):

* the allowed (acceptable) charging currents are temperture-dependent
* Single cells are charged a) first using constant current (and increasing voltage) and then b) using constant voltage / decreasing current
* Batteries (=combinations of more than one cell) may need a balancing period between a) and b). This is done by a dedicated balancing circuit, usually via resistors dissipating energy as heat.
* Batteries need a Battery Management System to monitor the voltage (U), the current (I) and the temperature (T) of every single cell
* The acceptable values for U, I, and T are depending on the actual cell chemistry (not all cells have the same chemistry!)
