Hello folks, this has recently happened on my display, I've tried resets with no luck, is there a known fix or is this just an age (camera) thing. This is an original A7, around 12 years old now I think. It's not a real problem but I was curious to see if there was a way of remapping you guys might advise?

I've had an A7S screen fail on me. I ordered an aftermarket one from China, which looked suspiciously similar to the official SONY one minus the Sony logo on the screen. Everything else incl. ribbon cable finish, metal frame finish was identical, so I'm pretty sure they came off the same factory production line as SONY's official screens. The replacement works fine.
Replacing the screen is not for the faint-hearted though; it requires significant disassembly. Also, getting a good replacement adhesive to hold the screen in the frame isn't easy; I believe SONY uses a heat-activated adhesive tape. I tried double-sided acrylic adhesive tape, but even that separates after a few days. In the end I resorted to using some electrical tape which functions well but doesn't look brilliant (what's wrong with a couple of screws, SONY?)
I just checked, my replacement LCD screen cost me £21 on eBay back in Jan 2022 (that seller no longer exists); they now appear to go for about £32 on eBay from a variety of different sellers (with UK stock).
The instructions for LCD replacement:

That's something to consider, I'm not sure my ham fistedness would suffice to do this but at the end of the day, I never had a screen on my film cameras.
I'll follow the link, thank you. _________________ A whole bunch of stuff. |

Yes, unfortunately the A7 and A7S screens failing is not an isolated incidence I'm afraid. When I researched it the A7 and A7S seemed to be more prone to this problem than the A7II/A7SII and later models. But it is all anecdotal evidence.
I'm not sure if SONY still repairs these or if you can find a good independent service centre. I only did it myself because I'm fairly handy and at only £21 it seemed worth the risk doing it myself, having read about other people successfully doing the same (but also experiencing the same adhesive issues).
I would hazard a guess that if SONY do it for you, they don't replace just the LCD panel, but rather the whole hinged screen on the back, primarily because of the adhesive issue. Also, what is not shown in the iFixit instructions is that if you accidentally dislodge the closing latch of the screen, you are going to have one hell of a frustrating experience getting that back in position. _________________ Mark
