I understand this lens is quite rare I was able to find very few information about it.

A few test shots using Canon 30D wide open. I'll try it on the 5D to see how it performs in FF.

Looks to perform well. Do you have pictures of the lens? Wink

Looks very decent at that I assume open aperture.

I have a Spiratone wide angle which is clearly a Sigma lens.

I would guess that you were only a few feet from the subject, and you mentioned that you were shooting wide open. At the max aperture any lenses DOF is going to be very shallow. Therefore, when shooting a portrait of a person or an animal, the point of focus is the eyes. If the eyes are in focus the rest of the portrait will fall into place.

Interesting lens, looks a little bit as my spiratone 135mm f/1.8. Do anyone know who made these lenses? Surprised

The MFD is 3 feet and I was about 4-5ft. yes I did try to focus the eye in the foreground but it's quite hard to nail the focus when shooting indoor with a moving toddler and under difficult lightning such as dim tungsten.

Here are few images comparing the Spiratone 85/18 vs Spiratone YS 85/1.7

Honestly they look almost identical to me, except for the focusing grip. Both have YS mount.

If you can find a small greek Sigma character (Σ) stamped somewhere on the lens, then it was definitely made by Sigma...If not, then it was made by someone else, but I'm not sure who.
The "Y/S" stands for "Yamaki System", a direct competitor to the T2 mount and named after Sigma's founder Michihiro Yamaki, who died recently BTW:
