So I have been taking a lot of athlete portraiture lately with my classic M42 50 1.4's, my Komines (Vivitar 90MM 2.5, Vivitar 135MM CF) and my Kiron (Lester 105mm).
Is there any justification at all to shell out 300$ for that old AiS Nikkor 105 1.8 when I have such a similar arsenal as is?
I am mostly concerned with microcontrast at B&W because this is 95% of what I put out.
I like the results I am putting out and the clients are very happy which leads me to seek out even more weapons, but is this logical at all? Because I could get a really nice Fujinon XF 33mm 1.4 for that money, a focal length I don't have but might want to have.
Thanks! |

I think that 1.8 version in new shape for 300$ is a very good buy nowadays.
The fast lenses fujinon gotta be very good lenses , you should compare same focal length ,tht means 100-105 mm Fuji fast lens with Nikkor 1.8 (I'm not sure the price would be very close). There are fast lenses that once closed down to 1.4-1.8 would give better results than 1.4-1.8 lenses , I'm not sure Nikkor 1.8 is the same case. If your clients are happy with the results of the lenses you have , that means the real interested to get the faster one is you. Would the clients notice the difference ? Most of the times no, if you shoot at the same aperture ,very few people manage to see differences. Shooting wide open the 1.8 is a new challenge for you and clients . Worth it to try? Why not? In case the results doesn't fit your expectations, it would be easy to sell it anyway. |

In all likelihood there's a guy with the AiS Nikkor 105 1.8 who dreams of owning the Bokina and 135 CF and thinks owning them would finally, at last, let them take better photos. _________________ https://www.flickr.com/photos/piggsyface/

The fast 105, and fast 85 are at times seriously over-rated.
I've had the 105 previously in a slightly slower iteration, and was far less than impressed.
The Series E 100mm f2.8 is a much better lens optically, if you can find one without oil on the aperture blades.
I actually prefer the old E for it's definition~ which is all a matter of personal taste.
I found the 105 to be a bit of a distance specific beast. As always, YMMV.

Why do you work with 90mm, 105mm and 135mm lenses simultanously? Could you replace all of then with a 1.8/105mm Nikkor?

I have the Nikkor 1.8/105mm, along with many other comparable Canon/Konika/Minolta/Nikon lenses. The Nikkor is pretty large/heavy, focus is "the other way round" (Nikonians will dispute this, of course), and it's a Xenotar type lens which means more color fringing than with other 2/100mm lenses (not relevant for b/w portraits). However, on 24 MP FF it has a very good detail resolution already at f1.8, albeit with low microcontrast. Bokeh is smooth. And, last but not least, it's simply a beautiful piece of engineering (and so is the 2/135mm).
If I was you, I would keep the 2.5/90, sell the two others and get either the 1.8/105 or the 2/135, depending on your needs.

Here a few 100% from the (rather demanding) 43 MP FF sensor of the Sony A7RII. All samples wide open at f1.8.

CAs certainly aren'r a problem for b/w portraits, even with high res 50 MP FF cameras.
Color portraits may require some attention occasionally, but certainly the AiS 1.8/105mm is very capable. See my earlier thread here:
http://forum.mflenses.com/viewtopic.php?t=84331 (all images therein at f1.8 as well).
