Okay, polling the collective for some info. I recently scored this rescue candidate:

It looked a good bit worse before some simple TLC. The "hood" has been bent, so a threaded cap probably isn't an option. I've seen pics of what may be an earlier version with a leather cap, so I don't know if that's what this would've come with. Either way, I'd like to have some sort of cap for the front side, even if it's repurposed from some other use. Thanks!

You can have something 3D printed.

That lens has an odd and rare 88mm filter thread, whereas the one suggested on ebay doesn't specify (or I missed it somewhere).
It might be that this cap is meant for the newer 82mm thread version of this nikkor (Nikkor N) . Make sure with the seller before buying.
I have the older 88mm version too. And It had a bent hood too. What I did was to get a stepup 88 to 95 ring, which allows me to use a much better hood from a sigma 600 and its cap, too. Not too hard to find.
(again, watch out when buying sigma 600 accessories. There are 86 and 95mm versions)

Make sure your lens has the rear 39mm filter fit. There has been threads discussing whether it should be there or not, but the user's manual says it should be fit at all time. I had to buy one.

I would build an outer one by lining cardboard with leatherette, and velvet on the inner rim; half an hour of DIY and you would solve it noninvasively and also aesthetically if you have some manual dexterity

A standard size 86mm cap will still fit. I can fit a 49mm cap on a 52mm thread. The difference the is a mm less.

I agree - push on cap should have some tolerance. I only have a handful of screw in caps (although I know that's not what you're going for or is being discussed).

And - as the green hood above attests - this is definitely worth getting a hood for, which goes for all on-axis, non solid mirror lenses.

My investment in this old warrior is pretty small, so going the repurpose route is my preference. No access to 3D printing. Stumbling onto the leather one would be awesome. For now, it'll live in the case.
As to the rear filter, the lens came complete with that one plus the other four in the lid of the case, all of which appear to be in the same place they left the factory.

Yeah, I saw that. The Scot in me won't let me spend $39 for a cap... At least not without searching for a pennytech solution.

Here is what I do with my odd-sized lenses: I find some stiff cardboard, trance the front of the lens on it and cut out that circle. Then I take a strip of that same cardboard (slightly longer than the diameter of the lens barrel) and wrap it around the lens, with a bit (or more) of overlap. I tape the strip to hold it together as a ring and put it around the top of the lens barrel. Then I put the cutout cardboard disk on top, so that the edge of the cardboard ring (wrapped around the lens) just touches the cardboard disc sitting on top. Now I use strips of black PVC tape to hold the disc in place, right across the top, like overlapping slices of pie, and down to the bottom of the strip. I cover the entire top and cardboard ring, and then one wrap of PVC tape around the ring. It's not beautiful, but completely functional and secure, and lasts for quite a while.

88mm outside? Some 3.5" I.D. pvc or cardboard tubing with some felt tape inside. Easy peasy cheap
