Huh, my first real post here on MFlenses - the place that helped me so much in the past. Time to give back and stop lurking.

I recently acquired the "Zebra" Pentax Auto-Takumar 55mm f/1.8 in pristine condition and for a rather good price. To be honest, I am collecting almost only German lenses and the usual FL/FD classics, but seeing the Zebra just made it click - I had to have it. It is pretty obvious where they got their inspiration from, but boy - that lens is sexy.
WechatIMG760 by george grant, on Flickr
The one I got marks the end of where Pentax used full stops on this lens - #187292,more on that can be found in the Takumar Field Guide. There seems to be very little information about this lens, so I though I'll do a quick review slash comparison with it's older brother, the Auto-Takumar 55mm f/1.8 - literally the same lens, or is it?
WechatIMG763 by george grant, on Flickr
Differences between the lenses are not just on the outside - compared to the "regular" Auto-Takumar 1.8 (batch #5) which has only 6 aperture blades and a maximum stopped down aperture of F/16, the first version (zebra) has 10 aperture blades that close down to F/22.

The zebra version is also shorter, however the minimum focus distance is unfortunately 10cm longer. As you can see the position of the aperture ring is also in different locations. For video, the regular version is definitely more convenient.
Now, pixel-peeping is not my thing at all since those are vintage lenses and we buy them because we want some character, especially in video. But here some short comparison photos of both lenses in case you want to make up your mind:
Fuji S-X10 + Lens Turbo Mk II, Classic Neg. JPG, ISO120, 10 sec timer, same exposure settings. Straight from the camera.

Auto-Takumar Normal Version 55mm @ 1.8
Not much difference wide open except that the regular version has a more "cat eye" bokeh in the corners. The Zebra seems a little sharper wide open.

Auto-Takumar Zebra 55mm @ 5.6

Auto-Takumar Normal Version 55mm @ 5.6
In this image comparison we can clearly see the advantage of the 10 aperture blades of the Zebra - however, notice how the photo of the regular takumar looks brighter. I used the same settings.

At f/11 things start to get strange. The normal Takumar seems like almost a full stop brighter than the Zebra. Looking back at the other f-stops, it really seems as if the Zebra is actually a f/2.0 lens rather than a f/1.8. I guess more testing is required which I will do soon.
DSCF1801-comp by george grant, on Flickr
At 1.8 both lenses are soft but the Zebra is a tad better. Both are sharp at 5.6, but the normal Takumar is a tiny bit better. At f/11 both lenses are mediocre with the Zebra having better sharpness in general.
That being said, the differences obviously don't justify the premium ($30 vs. $120) you would pay for the Zebra, however it confirms (again) what we already know about Pentax and their Takumar lenses in general - the first batch is always the best.
If you have any questions let me know, or if you want to see other comparisons - I have over 60 50mm-58mm lenses. I am really curious to find out why the normal version is so much brighter especially stoped down. Logic tells me because it has more aperture blades but ... if anyone knows, I am all ears.
Cheers,
George |

How is Chongching these days?
Thanks for presenting the Zebra.
If you can get to a lens clock (inexpensive) the curvatures for 1.8/55 front element is 12 diopters and the 1:2/55 is 15 diopters. The Zebra curvature could be either lens formula calculation given dates of manufacture. The 1:2.2/55 and the later 1:2/55mm have the same lens formula calculation (and real aperture) -- both lenses are actually f/2 max, from my collection...I don't have Zebra.
I would't say "we already know", because we don't, "about Pentax and their Takumar lenses in general - the first batch is always the best." Best for some uses, yes... More character, yes! You might like the 1:2.4/58mm Heliar and the 1:2/58mm Sonar too!
Regardless of number of aperture blades, f/11 on each lens should give the same exposure -- do the apertures look about equal area at f/11?
Lens differences can be easier to see on FF sensor... _________________ ☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮ like attracts like! ☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮☮

Judging from the OOF High lights aperture on the zebra is smaller @5.6 So there must be some aperture discrepancy.

This is strange, now that you said I've had a look and there is really a visual difference at f/11 - I have to switch the regular takumar to f/13 to get the same size like f/11 on the zebra. However the aperture on both lenses seems to change correctly on each change/stop.
I have a super-takumar 55mm / 1.8 early version, and the aperture at f/11 is the same as on the zebra. So the auto-takumar I did the test with might have a problem with the aperture like D1N0 mentioned. Never had this happening before - might there be a problem with the spring? The system is usually fool-proof, isn't it?
Seems like i gotta open it up and do the test again. Well, seems like were on to a good start
So for now obviously just the wide open comparison makes sense, disregard the other.

Yes I really like this lens. I had one once which I bought with a (relatively rare) Asahi Pentax K version camera. I really wanted to keep the lens but eventually decided to sell the camera to fund something else and felt that the lens really should stay with it. I still regret that. But I have several non zebra auto takumars and can say they are all pretty nice in my view.

Sorry The above link does not function and I cannot find a means to edit that post. I will try once more to post another photo link. This time it is a photo of the Asahi Pentax K but sadly not with the zebra lens (which as the page linked below acknowledges has been swapped out). Never the less you can see why I bought mine as with the zebra lens it was even more lovely.

I had some problems with it. It would only focus from CFD to 1.2 meters (2 on the scale) Turns out some handy work had been done:
There was a strange looking blocking thing for the aperture lever, I took it out (had to drill out the screws). Glued in a piece of tooth pick to serve as block. That restored infinity on the scale but not on the sensor (MFD was about 3.5 meter). I dismantled the helicoid but couldn't see how to get it right. Either too long or to short. Until I threaded it in once again and it was just right. Now it is functioning correctly.
# non standard block
#even less standard hack
#before helicoid rethreading
#2 after helicoid rethreading
Also the f1.8 position didn't entirely engage. The new block solved this too. _________________ pentaxian |

I like the bokeh of this lens very much. That early takumar air. It flares and isn't contrasty when shot into the light, but it adds to the character and contrast can be easily fixed to taste.
