Yes, I had been hesitating for obtaining the lens, because I already own Mamiya Macro 80mm f/4 N, which is nice enough for the macro job. But reading the different reviews and comparisons of both, I started to consider the possibility to add it to my collection. And after the local seller gave to me the discount in $75, I had not been able to withstand the temptation.

And it is really nice also for the general work. Not only for the macro job. It has perfect contrast, and really is sharp from the full opening. Which Macro 80mm f/4 doesn't do so well.

As, for example, how 80mm works on f/4.0:

I've had the Mamiya 120/4 macro, which is quite a perfect macro lens, albeit a bit large together with a Mamiya 645 to Sony adapter. Recently received the 80/4 macro as well from Buyee.Jp, but unfortunately it suffers from terrible haze.

For full frame cameras I'd also recommend the Minolta AF 100/2.8 macro; I use mine on a manual M(af) to Sony adapter. It’s probably not APO-ish like the Mamiya 120/4, but still really good, sharp at all distances and wide open as well, has no distortion, and is great as a portrait lens as well.

The 80 basically has a double gauss design with the groups at the outside. Probably separation in a group when it is hazy. The design of the 120mm is much different.

Personally I would like to get the 110mm 1:2.8 for shots like these but it is another ballpark cost wise. Even if offered at a low starting price auctions always escalate to several hundreds of Euro's

Oh well – there is really sixteen surfaces of the “glass-air”! And it steel delivers the astonishing contrast!

I already own MC Vega-28 120mm f/2.8 lens, which I use on my 645 system with the proper adapter. Anyway on the AF bodies you have to close the diaphragm manually with any kind of the manual lenses.

And t is not at all so bad :

That is a lot more compact than my Kaleinar 150/2.8 that won't stop down at all.

By the way, I compared once Kaleinar-3B 2.8/150 with the native system 645 lens Mamiya-Sekor C 150/3.5. And my conclusion was rather in favor to the 150/3.5.

Kaleinar isn't very sharp wide open. Can't say anything about stopping down. It has nice bokeh though. I have the Mamiya-Sekor C 150mm 1:4. A much better lens as well, more comparable to the Takumar 150/4. Will probably get the 3.5 as well if one pops up, but I am slowing down my purchases.(Still 5 on the way though :p).

One of the many images I made with the Mamiya Sekor A 4/120mm at the Domschatzmuseum Chur (Switzerland):

Now some 100% crops (original image taken at f8 or f11; due to diffraction f16 results in reduced overall resolution). Direct out of photoshop RAW conversion (sharpening at 25, radius 1 px). No additional sharpening:

Finally another 100% crop, this time with additional sharpening in Photoshop (80 sharpening at 0.5px radius) - it's almost too much already ...

Sure enough, a side-by-side comparision between the 50 MP images from the Fuji GFX and the 43 MP images of the Sony A7RII didn't show much differences in resolution (Fuji GFX with Mamiya Sekor A 4/120mm and Sony A7RII with Minolta AF 2.8/100mm Macro). The Minolta had a bit more lateral CAs, but that was easy correct in PP.

Look at those ... again Sekor A 4/120mm at the Fuji GFX. Again an exhibit from the Domschatzmuseum Chur, this time a fairly flat one -
to show the excellent performance of the Mamiya Macro. First the original image, resized to 900x1200 px. It's a detail from a chasuble (18th century, as far as I remember):

Now the 100% crops.
Image taken at f5.6 - results in best center contrast and fairly good corners (at f4 the corners are slightly soft).
RAW data converted with photoshop. No CA correction applied. Sharpening 40, radius 1 px.
First from the center:

Now the lower right corner. Again - no CA correction applied! The lens has no lateral CAs at all, at least on 50 MP sensors ...

Upper left corner. The slight drop of resolution in the upper left corner of this crop is not caused by lens problems -
but by the chasuble itself which is not completely flat at its upper end. You can see also a tiny amount of LoCAs / purple fringing:

The Mamiya Sekor A 4/120mm certainly is among the very best vintage MF lenses I own (out of nearly 900 lenses).

These were seriously expensive lenses new, and it shows.

Here, for comparison, the same Mamiya Sekor A 4/120mm lens used on the 43 MP Sony A7RII. This is also a 100% crop from the image center. RAW data were converted using the same parameters as with the Fuji GFX (eg sharpening 40, radius 1 px).

The difference is negligeable.

When taking images of golden and/or silver objects it is of critical importance that the lens is free from longitudinal chromatic aberrations (LoCAs). It basically means the lens must be apochromatic. Again, the Mamiya Sekor A 4/120mm has no problems at all. Image taken wih 43 MP FF Sony A7RII (and resized to 800x1200 px).

And here's the 100% crop from the image above:

The whole photography session - which lasted for several days - must have been an insanely expensive thing. Usually there were - apart from myself, the photographer - another 4-7 persons present: One or two security guys, one supervisor from the museum, two restorers (for handling the items - I wasn't allowed to touch the stuff), and at times two people from national TV ...

But it certainly was fun Wink
