Smallest 70-200mm? (read for specifics)

I'm interested in a certain class of 70-200mm or 70-210mm telephoto zoom, that as far as I know started with the likes of the Tokina SZ-X 70-210mm f/4-5.6 SD in 1985, continued by lenses like the Tamron 70-210mm F4-5.6 158A, but got swept away when larger zoom ranges of 55-200, 35-200 and 28-200+ could be had for the same size as an average 1979 70-200mm.

I am interested, AF or not (but preferably old and easily acquired), to know of any which are comparably small in length . I'm not counting crop sensor lenses, and whilst it's true modern zooms lenses are alot smaller still, they're not cheap for disassembly.

Thanks!

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but there's at least one Vivitar 70-210mm f4.5-5.6 that's 84 mm long (3.3 in) at infinity. It has a "macro" mode.

Here's the user manual, dated 1986:

I actually own that one, and a Sigma UC 70-210 which I forgot about which is similarly compact. I suppose what I'm looking for is something of the Tokina's class, by the looks of things I'll have to see to the wide array of Sigma lenses that came and went in the 90s, for something abit more 'premium'.

Smallest I have around that range so far is a Promaster MC 80-205mm constant f/4.5 that's only 14.5cm (5.5 inches) in length at infinity and with the hood retracted. No idea if Tokina or someone else made it. Several on Ebay right now for ~$30 after shipping. Not sure if that fits the class of lens you're asking about.

Kobori made a very short 70-200mm f/4.5-5.6 macro zoom, sold as a Koboron, Sirius, and probably other brands:

I own the Tokina SZ-X 80-200 4,5/5,6.

It is an excellent lens. Sharpness is crazy good and the format is fantastic.

But... I bought two copies and both were subject to a tilt of the focus plane rotating when zooming. I think that either the concept of the screw moving the groups is defective or I have been unlucky twice.

I would gladly hear if someone has a copy not affected by this issue. I would then try once more.

I had the Tokina SZ-X 80-200mm f/4,5-5,6 but that was quite long ago. I remember being quite happy with it. The size is fantastic. This was back when the first digital SLR's (with only little mp's) were coming up, so no idea how this lens would do on for example a 42+ mp mirrorless.

Very interesting- Koboron always goes under my radar, but if you go looking their name is on a bunch of interesting/unique manual focus lenses, like a 24-70mm.

Yeah, definitely because it starts at 60 rather than 70, but is a similar size. Thanks!

I've got these zooms of that era and type in my for sale box- the Sigma is a compact lens and about half the size of my Minolta Beercan and Vivitar S1 70-210's.

Miranda MC Macro 70-210 4.5-5.6 Olympus OM closed 100mm open 145mm Push-pull

Tokina SD 70-210 4-5.6 Minolta AF closed 85mm open 127mm Two ring -

Not quite up to the OP's specs, but worthy of consideration, the Tamron 171A 28-200mm is of similar length to the 158A, albeit of somewhat greater girth.
A favourite of mine for very many years, it was finally retired with a build-up of "fungus" deep in it's innards Sad

I have a Pentacon Prakticar 70-210mm 4-5.6 8cm-11cm (12 at MFD) it's 437 grams. Not shot with it because PB mount, it came in a lot. It is a Sigma made lens i'd say even though I can't find the made in Japan inscription.

Is that lenses that are short OR lenses that are short when around 200mm in focal length?

I have the vague recollection that there where some pull-push zooms that zoomed out as they were extended, so they'd be at their shortest at 210mm.

The first one- lenses that are short.

Tamron did both … very confusing!
Their selling line originally was "pull the subject towards you" (telephoto) and "push the subject away from you" (wide angle) … or something very similar.
My #104A 75-250mm is like that, as were others of that age, but the mechanical length of the lens doesn't change when zooming.
Later lenses like the #158A 70-210mm, mentioned by the OP, both zoom in the opposite direction and change length when they are zoomed.

Internal zooms usually start at the longest focal length, extending ones at the shortest. My 26a 35-210 extends from 35 to 210. The 19ah 70-210/3.5 seems to extend and starts at 70. But that is just the zoom/focusring serving as a hood at longer focal lengths. My Pentax-m 35-70 3.5 extends but still starts at 70mm and zooms out extending. So it is not a given.

Which mount? I believe the tamrons are all good enough and let you choose whatever mount you need.
