Mamiya-Sekor SX series lenses

I've been looking for info on the SX series Mamiya-Sekors, the last M42 lenses made by Mamiya, and it's hard to find much.

I'm not interested in the earlier Mamiyas that were often made by other companies, just the SX series.

I've just obtained 2.8/28 ad 2/50 SX lenses and am in the process of removing the lip on the back of the aperture ring so they can be mounted like any other M42 lens.

Anyone own either of these and has comments on their quality?

You don't really need to remove the lip - you can just reset the infinity. It's faster, and it's reversible. They still make more than 2 full turns in the adapter even, with the lip.

PS. As with all other things Mamiya: http://herron.50megs.com/

I have the 2.8/28 (I removed the lip, but probably it's possible to modify a nex adapter to mount it without grinding the lip off ) and it's a very good lens, imho: I rate it above the 28/3.5 takumars and rokkors I have, which are already good lenses. The only 28 I have which is clearly better than this is the contax distagon 28/2.8.
Colors and character are great, and sharpness is very good too from wide open on aps-c.
I read somewhere that corners are not so great: I never noticed that, but I never used the lens on Full Frame so I don't really know.

Thanks for the tip.

This is good news, I have the 7 element Rokkor 3.5/28 and the 7 element Hexanon 3.5/28, both are great, so if this Mamiya compares favourably, I will be happy. I paid 16ukp inc postage, a bit less than a Distagon. Smile

I did a quick research and it seems that there are M42 Mamiya lenses, and custom bayonet lenses. What Mamiya lens can be used on Canon/Pentax DSLRs? Is this modification on SX lenses difficult?

Mark, it is only the Mamiya SX lenses that have the lip.
There are lots of other Mamiya M42 lenses that do not and are easily usable on many different DSLR's
Mamiya Z/ZE lenses are the most difficult to adapt (if not near impossible) so leave them alone for digital work.
Of course, Ian in this post is preferring the SX series because these were definitely made by Mamiya.
The others were of mixed parentage.
I have not adapted an SX lens but others might chime in here.

I have the SX 1.4/55, but never tested it yet because i didn't want to butcher it. Is it possible to adjust anything so that i can use it on the 5D?

Try this adapter.
I have one and works fine.

Took 5 mins with a fine file to remove the lip on the 2.8/28.

Initial test on my NEX-3 is promising, bu sadly my NEX is buggered, the coating on the sensor has worn off over a large part so I am getting a diffuse glow on highlights, ghosting and veiling fare, regardless of the lens, worse with some than others. So I need a new camera. Sad

Two wide open shots:

I would ask the seller directly, they may have copy and pasted the exclusion list from another seller, see below for the reason why.

This is almost too funny, the seller states:
"Item location: 深圳, 廣東省, China
Shipping to: Worldwide
"
But they exclude more than half the world, including HongKong which is a part of China, and China???

I had the 28mm f2.8 SX which worked great on film. Never tried to adapt it to digital however.

Why not ask the seller directly?

I received my adapters shipped to Ireland with no hassle from the seller. So I would trust them.

Ian,

Thought I'd ask you since you have experience with the 50mm f/2.
I too, was curious about the SX line, as these aren't Tomioka sourced lenses. Had avoided these due to necessary surgery to allow them to work. But I got a newer M42 adapter that clears the lip. I picked up the 50 and 135 f/2.8. Both look to be in great shape. But I noticed something odd, depressing the aperture pin doesn't operate the blades. Neither does turning the ring while the pin is depressed. Both SX lenses just stay wide open at f2 and f2.8. :-\

Is there something else about these SX lenses that make them work differently from other auto pin M42 lenses? ie Yashica, Taks, Fujinons, and older Mamiyas.

Thanks!

I posted to here too, and this thread has great how to pics for modding the SX for other adapters.

They should work the same as any other M42 with the pin. My 135/2.8 has the same issue - the blades are stuck. I think it's probably oil on the blades. My Mamiya CS 3.5/200 is also stuck wide open.

Ah OK! I was afraid of that. These two will be added to the queue for refurbing.
Thanks for the quick reply!

Not economical for Ian, but WNG555, you're in PHX... This man is in FL.

Thanks for the suggestion and link, Mir!

Good to know of a reputable and experienced lens restorer. There used to be an old Korean gentleman in CA who was a legend. But I believe he retired.
I'll give it a go myself, if no luck, there's always FL. I probably wouldn't risk it if they were pricey and rare lenses.

I have machined a suitable M42 => Sony E adapter for my six Mamiya Sekor SX lenses. The aperture function is retained, and there's enough space for the small pin on the aperture ring so that it doesn't interfere with the adapter.

Some preliminary test results here:

Mamiya Sekor SX 28mm 1:2.8: http://artaphot.ch/mamiya/mamiya-sx-objektive/536-mamiya-sekor-sx-28mm-1-2-8
Mamiya Sekor SX 85mm 1:1.7: http://artaphot.ch/mamiya/mamiya-sx-objektive/542-mamiya-sekor-sx-85mm-1-1-7
Mamiya Sekor SX 105mm 1:2.8: http://artaphot.ch/mamiya/mamiya-sx-objektive/570-mamiya-sekor-sx-105mm-f28
Mamiya Sekor SX 135mm 1:2.8: http://artaphot.ch/mamiya/mamiya-sx-objektive/568-mamiya-sekor-sx-135mm-f28
Mamiya Sekor SX 200mm 1:3.5: http://artaphot.ch/mamiya/mamiya-sx-objektive/541-mamiya-sekor-sx-200mm-1-3-5

The 2.8/28mm and the 2.8/135mm are surprisingly good (comparable to or even better than the corresponding Zeiss CY Distagon 2.8/28mm and Sonnar 2.8/135mm). The rare and heavy Sekor SX 1.7/85mm performs quite similarly as the Konica Hexanon AR 1.8/85mm. The 105mm is a bit a disappointment, at least at infinity. It may shine at closer distances, but that has to be verified. The 3.5/200mm performs comparable to many 4/200mm of its time - not brilliant, but a pretty solid performer.

Still have a SX 55/1.8 here that I have to ‘unpin' before I can use it. I'm curious about its performance.

I have a SX 1.8/55mm here as well (not yet listed in my website). I did compare it quickly to a Zeiss CY 1.7/50mm which is a [7/6] computation, rather uncommon for a 1.7/50mm lens, using the A7 II 24 Mp FF camera. Wide open and at f2.8, the Mamiya SX 1.8/55mm is much softer than the Zeiss, but it has a pretty nice rendering (not much astigmatism). At f5.6 both lenses are excellent even in the FF corners: No CAs visible, full detail, good contrast.

I certainly wouldn't hesitate using the Sekor SX 1.8/55mm as an excellent landscape lens (at f5.6 ... fCool! How it renders wide open at closer distances (around 1m / 3 ft) for portraits I dont' know yet.
