I tried this tiny c-mount lens reversed and stopped down to f4. It's not bad, better than I expected, but not as sharp as I would like and there is some diffuse glow. The lack of CA at this high magnification is surprising. The subject is a moth, the eye is probably half a millimetre wide, so this is pretty extreme. Stacked images made with Zerene Stacker.

I did something similar to this with a D-mount 1/2" Wollensak lens. Mounted it to a lens cap and then set the cap on top of a Tamron 90mm macro lens. I used a crop-sensor camera for the photos, so only the center was being photographed and really only the center of the shot was sharp (lens set to f/Cool, but the magnification was pretty impressive.

Here's the lens mounted to a lens cap. I drilled a half-inch hole in the cap and just glued the lens in place.

This is the subject, an old printer box. Note the lens sitting on top of the box.

A crop of the general image area. I chose the "XP" to focus on.

And here's the shot using the Wollensak 1/2"

I need to find a cool looking dead insect. Print on a box is boring.
