I have come into the possession of the following lens, and have no idea about it really, what it was used for etc.

Going by the serial number it is from 1922? Although the barrel doesn't seem from this age, maybe I am wrong.

It feels like there is an out casing missing to the lens barrel?

It also came in what seems to be a mahogany box, not sure if this is for this exact lens or if it has just been paired with it.

Any info anyone has would be great.

Possible could be large format lens adapted to helicoid?
