Any m42 to E-mount adapter will be fine.

Not those designed for mounting helicoids, there are quite a few special short models available now, which only add distances between 1mm & 6mm.
The flange distance for M42 is 45.46mm so a standard adapter will be nearly 30mm long.

This is not true.

I have three and every one of them has different length.
Haven't seen this magnitude of error with adapters for any other legacy systems.

The register distance (distance from flange to film plane) is 45.46mm.
