Good day:

I'm new to this forum and this is my first post! I'm impressed with the wealth of knowledge from all the users here.

As this is a 17 blade version, I thought that the focal length was supposed to be indicated in 'cm' rather than 'mm'. As seen in the picture, it says '58mm'. The serial number also seems to indicate rather late production (~1954?) for this version. Is this some sort of anomaly? Any help would be appreciated thank you everyone!

Welcome MellyVinelli

Nice lens!

Thank you.

I brought this example to my local camera repair shop and he noted "glue degradation/separation". I asked him what gave him the impression and he said it was the 3-4 bubbles in the forward group of lenses. I thought those are simply Zeiss bubbles and was a sign of quality in vintage lenses.

There doesn't seem to be any sort of the "rainbow film" on the edges and aside from minimal cleaning marks the lenses looks to be in good shape.

Could he be mistaken?

I guess we need to see those "bubbles", whatever he's seeing. I can't see anything like that in any photos of the lens in those links either. Bubbles are obviously air bubbles in the glass from what I've seen of those, tiny bubbles...

Separation rarely happens with post-war Biotars. If the 'bubbles' has black edges, they are small bubbles inside the glass.

Hello, here are some photos if it helps:

#2

#3

I think I see black rings around the bubbles. Thoughts?

Look like air bubbles in glass to me, in #1.

Am not seeing anything distressing in those photos.

Looks like glass bubbles to me, and they are only visible in pictures if you have bokeh balls.
Should be a fine lens. It may need some gentle cleaning as it looks dirty, hopefully it's only the outside surfaces.

Thanks for the feedback.

It is quite dirty but it's dirty on the inside surfaces. I see a bit of grease on the inside of the front element. I plan on bringing it to my trusted local repair shop and have him do an overhaul.

Is this a particularly difficult lens to work on? I've see YouTube videos on disassembly but I wouldn't do it myself.
