It's really the focus being set to a distance far enough from the actual distance of the lights that turns them into disks.

Somewhere I have some shots with Christmas tree shaped Bokeh, an ideal set-up for OOF Xmas lights?

Unfortunately the best I have available to hand is this slightly earlier example with butterfly bokeh

High time I redid it with more spacing between the subject & the lights!

We only recently put up our tree, and all we have on it right now are these little candy santas. Used the Rokkor-PF 55mm 1.7 for this one.
