Sorry for two quick posts. I picked up a Rollei 50 1.7 planar, that is optically great but needs a regrease. i think I may try a DIY on this lens any suggestions on a good grease for the Helicoid that isnt volatile? Thanks

I personally use two kinds depending on how much resistance I want. These are thinner than "typical" cheap grease. You can get these easily on Amazon.

Tamiya Cera-grease HG - Grease infused w/ boron nitrite particles (I suspect it similar to cheap thermal paste)
Helimax-XP - Grease infused w/ lithium & PTFE Teflon

Tamiya HG is slightly thicker than the helimax and one of the most expensive grease price wise per gram and used for RC cars. 10g for $5 USD
Helimax-XP is thinner but great value for a grease that's listed for Helicoid and optical instruments use. 57g for $10 USD

The ones I suggested don't emit off-gassing unless you somehow left your lens inside a super oven that goes to 250 Celsius heat, according to the Helimax warning labels.

Also you'll get more responses if posted topic in the right forum sections. http://forum.mflenses.com/equipment-care-and-repairs-f6.html

Can a Mod move this thread to there?

I can vouch for that stuff. I re-greased my Minoltas with it, works wonders and not too messy.

Yup. That's what I use. It is for lenses. And it is affordable. A tiny amount goes a very long way.

These are the greases I use:

Super light grease, for very light focus action, ideal for fine threads: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Helicoid-Grease-for-Camera-lens-10-15ml-Made-in-Japan-/252833910796

A thicker grease, for when you want more resistance: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Helicoid-Grease-for-Camera-lens-30-15ml-Made-in-Japan-/272536269720

A super high quality Lithium grease for lenses that can't handle any oil migration: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/271194713421
