As stated it is sharp even from wide open.
Macro function has a fine focus to it and is easy to use

Great detail. Incidentally, over at the photrio.com forum (used to be apug.org) there's a discussion on the Minolta XK. One member posted an ad from a 1975 photo magazine. The ad includes Canon prices. I was rather surprised to see that the 35-70/2.8-3.5 SSC was the second most expensive Canon zoom in that ad at $429.95:

Yes, a very expensive lens indeed. I guess that might reflect the extensive costs of R&D in bringing it to market.
The fact that the design was copied so widely afterwards reflects how good it was.

no.3 from third batch has some nice contrast as I see and natural colors which I like
