Hi!

I received some days ago this rare MOM-1 500mm/8 by KMZ, which appears to be a lens produced before the first MTO 500mm/8.

Here is the lens

Great shots! I have the Rubinar 1000 and have not had it out much (for a mirror it is remarkably big and heavy!)

Remarkably sharp for such an old lens. Very few doughnuts, too, for a mirror.

About donuts, depends of the background. If there are few highlights points, there won't be donuts. Donuts are like bubble, it's not automatic Smile .

Very sharp!! Remarkable rendering from the old lens. And no doubt the photographer deserves some credit.

I have the later version 3M-5A in single-coated and multi-coated. Wonderful mirror lenses. I think yours is performing better than mine!

ZM-5A is not a later version, it's another lens. MOM, MTO and MTOM were calculated by the famous Maksutov (specialist of telescopes), ZM-xA serie was designed by Volossov, the father of the Helios (40, 44), Tair design, and many other soviet lenses.

Basically it is one, just not made or computed by him (Maksutov) Wink

Concept of mirror lens with menisk is Maksutov idea yes.
Diagram of MTO and ZM is slighy differents.
Maksutov had very bad relations with collegues and direction (at GOI). I think that's why MTOM (by Maksukov, 1958) doesn't appear in GOI catalogu of prototyp : When Maksutov designed the MTOM, even if he officialy worked for GOI, he was exiled in Pulkovoy observatory ( Leningrad), and I think it's why MTOM was made by OOMZ (situed in Leningrad), not GOI / KMZ.
So they certainly asked Volossov to continue the work of Maksutov.
