Hallo

As I am still looking for some MF ~35 which is fast and I came across Canon R system (~1960) 35/2.5. From samples I saw it is pretty sharp but I wonder one thing - When Canon decided to change the system from R to FL (The R series lens was replaced in April of 1964 with the release of the Canon FX camera featuring the new FL lens mount) is it OK to assume that this 35/2.5 R became 35/2.5 FL? Or was it modified optically speaking?

I'd say they're the same, both 7/5 design. You can compare the specifications here http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/fllenses/ and here: http://www.pacificrimcamera.com/pp/cancanflex35f25.htm

But i cannot speak from my own experience.

Thank you for your interesting input. It seems they are the same. Here is some more information :

The canon Fl is a very good lens and seems to resemble the Canon R.
Be aware that the canon FL has a distinctive rear projection beyond the breech mount that does interfere with quite a few adapters - and this prevents the lens mounting correctly. The R seems to also have this.
Of course these lenses work quite well on Canon mount film cameras, but it could prove troublesome if you are mounting to an adapter for digital.

I've had trouble with some adapters with Canon FL lenses until by chance I bought this FOTGA version which fits perfectly:-

On my FD adapter, I just removed the long screw that the lock ring on the adapter moves, I now have no issues with the FL's that have a bulging rear... :-0

And what is the IQ of that old canon lens.

I heard some good opinions about it, but never had one in my own hands.

Want to buy one but don't know if it's good really.

Thank you, very much.

I bought the R 2,5/35, after that I purchase the FOTGA FD-Nex adapter. Hope It will do a good job.

I have the canonmatic R version.

The formula is the same like the the FL ones.

The difference is only the coated? Better in the FL of course

The R has high contrast very saturated colors, very low CA

But has distortion in the barrel mode. And bourned highlights.

That distortion can be worst at close to medium distance.

Tomorrow, if I can post pics (actually no in lenses forum) will send two.

Great lens. I like it a lot. But one question is bugging me, why there are two rings for aperture?

These Canomatic lenses have an early form of auto-stop-down, one sets the taking aperture, and the other primes the auto-stop-down of the blades to trigger a moment before the exposure starts, other similar looking lenses have a Preset aperture system, one rig is preset to the taking aperture and the other(the aperture ring) opens and closes the blades, so you set it to f8, focus wide open and turn the aperture till it stops, and shoot, no need to estimate how far to turn or count the clicks as you stop down to shoot, there are also single ring Preset versions, you typically push-in and turn to preset.
it's my favorite lens class, IMO, it's the vintage sports car in the lens world.
