i just got a C/Y Planar 50/1.7 on loan from a friend, to try it on my Canon 6D.

it came with an unlabelled adapter on it, and upon trying it the mirror gets stuck after a shot is taken.
i have to unmount the lens to get the mirror back in position.

i have read that this lens and other C/Y lenses should work on a 6D, so maybe this is an adapter problem?

also, the lenses focusses quite some beyond infinity, so maybe the adapter is too thin.

who uses this lens on a 6D?

and which adapter might will work? (and is affordable..)

thanks!

This lens is known to cause problems with 5D/II/6D mirrors when coupled with C/Y adapters that are slightly too thin. The issue is a combination of the protective fin being stuck in the way of the mirror as well as the rear lens element hitting the mirror when focused past infinity setting. Both issues can be eliminated by using a C/Y adapter of proper thickness.

Since you mentioned that your lens focuses past infinity when coupled with the adapter it came with, I can definitely say that the adapter is slightly too thin. Unfortunately, it is not easy sourcing the right adapter. Adapters vary between sellers and batches, so getting one of a proper thickness is a matter of luck.

Thanks for your reply.
The problem is as I expected.

I see that buying an adapter randomly will be hit or kiss.

Perhaps someone knows which adapter is the right thickness and knows where to get it.

I guess that cheap adapters might no longer be an option.

Hi
I do not have first hand experience of a particular C/Y to EOS adaptor, but the trick is probably to go for an adaptor that will allow you to shim it if necessary
This one from Fotodiox looks promising http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fotodiox-Pro-Lens-Mount-Adapter-Zeiss-Contax-Yashica-c-y-Lens-to-Canon-E-/172302205330?hash=item281e030192:g:-woAAOSwV0RXrH2k

In my experience most adaptors are machined a little too thin, even expensive ones, better to err on the side of too thin rather than too thick so long as it is possible to insert shims of some sort. It sounds like the adaptor currently fitted may be much thinner than you'd expect, the adaptor should space the lens an extra 1.5mm from the camera flange
so if you have the means to accurately measure the adaptor you could quickly check that out.

There is advice elsewhere on these forums as to how to go about shimming these adaptors, good luck! and Happy Christmas.

I suggest using a Leitax mount. It costs about the same as the mentioned better adapters. Here is one with a Pentax mount.

I can vouch for Leitax too. It's perfect. Turned my Zeiss 28mm C/Y into a native canon mount, absolutely love it. No more hassle with adapters.

The leitax adapter seems like a solid solution.

Is the thickness precise? Meaning no or not too much focus beyond infinity?

I read that the Planar 50/1.7 could be tricky concerning mirror issues.

Any first hand experience?

I don't have first hand experience with Canon. To be sure, you can email David from Leitax and he will respond truthfully and quickly.

I contacted David and he cannot tell if the lens will work for sure.
If the Leitax adapter is the correct thickness to allow infinity focus and not beyond, then there is a good chance that it will work without mirror issues.

Meanwhile I have not really been able to try the lens out, but what are the opinions in general about the lens?

Would it be a standout between other standard lenses?

I have a modest collection so far, and am quite fond of my Topcor 58/1.8 and Takumar 55/2.

For the price, it is one of the sharpest, if of not the sharpest 50mm lens ever made. There are numerous reviews that confirm it. The MTF score is just stellar. I was blown away by my copy. The 1.7 compared to the 1.4, is the sharper one. Classic Zeiss rendering.

The Rollei HFT Planar aka Voigtlaender Color Ultron 50mm/F1.8 even beats it slightly (source: Color Foto Test from 1985). The positive aspect is that the Voigtlaender branded Version is also available in the more versatile M42 version.

My copy, however, shows spherical aberration wide open. Closed by 2 or more stops, the lens is super sharp.

Sample variation?

My 2 copies of the Voigtlaender branded version in M42 are perfectly in order; i.e. already contrasty and sharp wide open. That't perfectly in line with the mentioned test report mentioned before.

Here you can see example pictures of one of my copies on both APS-C (Ricoh GXR-M) and FF (Sony A850):
