Nikkor 85 or Leica 90?

One more time for the old question.

I have the Nikkor Ais 85/2.

Good portrait lens.

Medium contrast.

Not so sharp, but enought to eyes, hair and eyelashes, with something soft skin.

Nice specially in colors, very delicate colors. Nothing excessively vibrant.

Very, very low CA. From 5,6 I can´t see them.

Paceful.

Do you recomend the summicron non Apo 90/2?

It's very cheap now.

My sharp portrait lens is the Nikkor Ai 3,5/135.

I had Leica-R Elmarit 90mm f2.8 that is better lens than Nikon.
I had also Leica-M version that is wasn't better than Nikon.
Cheap Leica is always suspicious.

I have Nikkor 85/2 and Summicron 90/2.While both are very good lenses I prefer Leica colours and oof blurr.

It's well worth getting just to try it,I recently picked up an R 90 Pre-APO that had severe water damage, the aperture blades were all rusted through and falling apart, the elements had calcium, rust, and who knows what else deposits on them, it's now useable again, and based off what I get from it, it's worth getting even if you have other great lenses like the 90AA.

I would say that the pre-APO Summicron 90 (no matter if the R- or the M-version) are an improvement over the Nikkor 2/85.
I consider the Nikkor 1.8/85 a better lens than the 2/85, still with the Cron 90 ahead.
My pre-APO Summicron M 90 is one of my most loved lenses ever. But I also liked the R 2/90 which I had on loan for a while and my Nikkor 1.8/85 also constantly amazes me.

Yeah, this is what they say, that the non-Asph. version of the 2/90 is not as sharp as the Asph version.
But honestly, it's definitely sharp enough. Most other manufacturers would be happy if their lenses were as sharp.
For portraitures I don't need extreme sharpness anyway.

Why go slow? The Samyang, Opteka, Rokinon, etc, etc, 85mm f/1.4 are very good for the price and better bokeh IMO than Nikon's 85mm f/1.4. The out of focus highlights at the edges are round instead of oval so you don't get that sea-sickness inducing feeling of motion looking at the shots.

You could try and get a mamiya 645 80mm f1.9 or f2.8. IME, they perform superbly on FF with little CA and no vignetting at all. It performs well enough that I've not touched my Zeiss planar 85 f1.4 for a long time. They also work extremely well with extension tubes. This shot shows the 80mm lens next to my D810 with a 150mm f2.8 attached. (a really stunning lens)

Mamiya is known by the excellent normals lenses they made in 35 mm format and medium format too.

Some people said, in the past, that the SX 55/1,8 Mamiya lens was one of the best in that segment.

And the 80 mm lenses for the 645 are really good.
