Many shy away from Mirror lenses. I admit some are very poor performers and backgrounds can be a problem.
A mirror lens would not be my first choice for a 300mm but it can be a useful second lens.
This is the Rubinar f4.5 300mm. It is an excellent performer giving better resolution and sharpness than many cheap 300mm lens. It is also a lens that can be put into your camera bag and carried about. The f4.5 is actually nearer f5.6 but still gives plenty of light. The lens is easily hand held.
Here is a Rubinar next to the Tair 300 ps. Not quite Russian twins!
Not only is the Rubinar a lot smaller and lighter than the mighty Tair, it is also very much sharper. Which it should be, compared to the very old Tair the Rubinar is a modern design, the Rubinar range superseded the MTO mirror range and were an improved optical design and a bit more expensive.
I will admit the Tair can produce nicer out of focus backgrounds!
I would not usually use it for Close ups but they make good test shots. You may see the ‘Mirror type boke’ but no donuts at this subject to background distance.
Crop
I have used the Rubinar with moderate success for street work. It doesn’t look like a long telephoto so does not attract attention. When standing at the right vantage point the 300mm reach can often catch a shot you like. This is IMO the ideal use for the lens.
A crop from the above
No problem at all with the background here

Those seem like extremely good results for a mirror lens; it may be worth trying them again. Were you using a hood ? On mine it adds a lot to the perceived bulk of the lens, but it seems necessary to use it.
The Rubinar is a rather expensive lens as these things go. _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

I think you can often find a bargain Rubinar as some people believe it won't fit a DSLR. You do have to add a small extension and adjust the focus to get infinity back this is a two minute job. The extension is needed to clear the overhang of the silly useless built in camera flash.
I have the hood for the lens and use it most times. With shots in dull light or the sun behind it isn't needed.
When I first had this lens I was surprised at its performance. it is a good as the Tamron 500mm. The Tam 500mm is also better with a good hood. I have done tests with it using an extended (Rolled up matt black card) and seen improvement of contrast and sharpness but never tried it with the Rubinar.
I believe Attila is a fan of the older MTO range? I'm not sure if he has tried the Rubinars?
I have never tried the 500mm f8 Rubinar but suspect that would also be a good one. _________________ Pentax K10D & K100D. Many Tamron Adaptall SP lenses, Fujinon f4.5 400mm. A loved Lens Baby 2, Lubitel triplet +++ and many film cameras. Mainly a Digital user inc G5, GR2

I'm never too sure about taking somebody elses poor results.
As you know the slightest shake can ruin shots from a 500mm lens and too many people seem to have cheap tripods that can produce more shake with vibration than you would have got from trying to hand hold!
As you know I rate the Tamron SP 500mm very highly. Its great. I refer anybody who thinks Mirrors are rubbish to this test.
