I have the Soligor branded version, it's a quite decent lens, it seems to have the same sharpness at f/6.3 and at f/8, and it also looks to be better at near infinity than at closer distances. _________________ Ivan Lee Barcellos - Director of Photography

What I understood is the nickname Wundertüte was aimed at those 400/6.3 and 500/8 with simple optical scheme, after a german review where the name was given to a Beroflex , the first of the series. Samyang, coming after, surely borrowed the nickname.
I also understood some other brand was sold as "Girl watcher" in the US. They are more or less all the same... _________________

Makinon made it's own 400mm i think. That green toned glass is its trademark. It's quite usable wide-open. See 2400px sample on NEX.

Hi there,
New to the M42 world so i'll start with my first one...
I did some test with this one, it's definitly better at f11. So i use it wide open to documentate my bird watchings, heavy but usefull for a cheap 400mm on a x1,6 Canon ; and i find it very fun to use on a tripod at f11 to try some interesting renders on birds too...
I have some pics taken with it on my flikr and here are the last ones, at f11 :
Sharpness is very decent, contrast is medium and you'll have to think before shooting if you want a interesting bokeh. Again, for the price, i find it very fun and usefull.
..ok...i think a new profile may not post img here so i'll check later... :/ _________________ Visit my website : http://www.vintagephotography.fr

Tamron 400mm f6.9 is no 1 for me - and I've tried just about every variety of old preset 400mm. You can see reviews inc mine on pentax forums:

That covers most of 'em.
I can add that sample variation is more important IMO than the name or type, specifically with the reseller nameplates, in respect of quality. _________________ pentax ME super (retired)

No, the tamron is smaller and lighter than the average.
All these 400mm are challenging to hand hold, and more so on crop factor dslr's. My results improved somewhat with practice and familiarity with the lenses ... but a bean bag is one of my first resorts.

Personal preference for the cheap end of this type is Tokina presets - mine is a Mamiya branded one.
But that may be just copy variation. _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

Yes I think these "tokyo Koki"'s are good ones generally. The first one I ever tried was a lemon, but since then they have impressed. I acquired this Palinar for a tenner, classic example with the silver mount and 47mm faux "t-mount". Sample pic:
The musselmans raft is now my regular test pic - sun behind, lens solidly on bean bag, a variety of detail, colours and edges. crops f6.3, f8, f11 with my samsung NX20, default pp only from RAW in LR3. Only the good 400's resolve the writing on the pipe wide open.
