I recently got lucky and came across a Icarex 35 S TM that has a concave element Carl Zeiss Ultron 1.8/50 in m42 mount. I got a really nice price on it and I am receiving it on Wednesday. I was wondering if anyone had any insight on this lens, as there was not THAT much I could find on it, but most of what I found sounded very favorable. Also, would anyone recommend using a filter or should I get a hood and call it good? I know it takes b50 filters, which are quite pricey, but maybe i would be better off just with a hood? Or getting a filter conversion mount so it would take regular filters.

Also, I have found another immaculate same camera with the same lens that is in pristine condition- also rare m42-for a good price. I do not need two of them, but in such condition for that price, maybe I should buy it. In case I do, what are the chances someone would be interested in it, and for what price? I would feel more comfortable making the second purchase knowing that I can make the money back easily. Also, if anyone has any example pictures taken with said lens, I more than welcome you to guys to share.

I'm really excited for it : )

It's not as cheap as other one but super mint...what would be considered a bargain price? Cause that's all I like is bargains : ) it seems to go for at least 600 bucks on the bay

Don't quote my work when the word "cheap" is anywhere close...

I had, and sold, an Ultron in Ikarex mount. It is a superb lens, beautifully sharp even wide open with typical Zeiss colors, bokeh and micro contrast.

I sold it because I discovered the Zenitar M 1.7/50. A lens that produces images that rival the Ultron, at least within the limits of my humble skills. The Zenitar can be purchased, in excellent condition, for less than $75 US. It also takes standard filters and hoods. It may not be as pretty as the Ultron but its images are. With this lens in my kit I could not justify holding on to the Ultron as I could buy several good lenses for what I had invested in it.

That is a very valid point. I would never pay 800+ for it like the eBay prices ask and I wasn't seeking it out, but it was too good of a deal to pass it up. I really look forward to the wide open sharpness, as I love shooting open. I have heard great things about the zenitar 50/1.7, but I really have enough 50's for now where I will only pick it up if I come across a bargain.

I can give you my zenitar 1.7/50 for your second Ultron, if you want.

Thanks for addressing the question. I did get my copy for a bargain price then, but this second purchase would be out of the bargain range. But the mintyness of it might make up for that. And yeah I believe I'm more inclined to get a hood for it, concave element helps regardless.

I have one too. Not use it much now but will use it more when I upgrade my camera.

For filters, get the adapter here Click here to see on Ebay.

The M42 mount Ultrons generally list for about twice the price of the Icarex mount versions. On Ebay US you are generally looking at $800 for the M42 lens. You might judge the value of the bargain against that level. Still, I expect that the supply of Ultrons of both types to be larger in Europe than the US which should have an effect on pricing.

Thank you Calvin83 for the link. I think I will go that route.
Newst- yes that's about the impression I got. This deal would still be way below that figure, I've still been debating on it. I feel like I could sell one of them and keep the other for free, but at the same time silly to invest such a sum in a lens you already have. And I do live in the U.S., everyone who's selling one jacks up the price like crazy, which only makes me want to buy it more. Not sure I'll come across one in such condition (unused since the 70's) without paying at least a grand. Oh decisions!

Kevincamera or something similar list everything on double price or triple, look always sold items on Ebay and look average and bid history, self bidding is very common . I love this lens match, but several one is just same good or even better 50mm f1.8 not a tough league, probaly Zenitar 50mm f1.7 for lot less money is same good indeed (may even better) psst.. don't tell to anybody Russians can be this good. I think Konica 50mm f1.7 dirt cheap and same excellent as well.

Yes- I always check the sold for prices, never the asking prices. And even then, I take the lower end of the averages. I realize there are lenses out there that are a better value, and I imagine it's price is not just a correlation of quality, but rarity and demand. Like I said, I have heard great things about the Zenitar, but I'm not buying the lens for sake of having a user 50mm. I have plenty of those.
It'd be more of an investment/shelf queen type of situation, and I imagine the price of it will only go up.
I have decided to pull the trigger on the second one, I don't see much of a risk- and I want it Wink
I just know I would regret not getting it down the line. I appreciate your responses.
