I went to a modelmakers' exhibition this morning with the intention of capturing a swag of images.
Kept meeting people that I had not seen for a long time, and the morning was spent in conversation.
I brought home three images only.
Great morning - but I am picture poor for it Very Happy
Here are two of the shots
OH

PS - can any of our British or US members identify the ship - it has a distinctive place in the history of both nations

Looks like Cook's HMS Endeavour to me, 18th century merchant ship with three masts and a spritsail.

But then I note that large eagle on the prow, which suggests it's American.

I'm stumped, but I'll have a guess - John Paul Jones' Ranger?

Very similar I think.
The Endeavour was a barque converted from a coal carrier.
This one is a sloop.
There is a clue in the title of the post, and also on the prow.

Hmm, maybe it's HMS Eagle, the ship that the Turtle tried to blow up with a primitive mine? Smile

Very good deductive reasoning Ian - but no.
That isn't an eagle but a bird of a different coloured coat (hint : turncoat)

Hmm, a Yankee turncoat... has me thinking of John Paul Jones.

But that bird...

I'll have a guess at HMS Vulture, the ship that was sent to meet Benedict Arnold?

Well done - it is indeed HMS Vulture, a ship that survived both the American War of Independence as well as the French Revolutionary Wars.
I should have taken a shot of the other side of the hull which is finished, but forgot Embarassed
Cheers

My uncle used to build model ships, not as nice as that one though, his were quite a bit smaller. He was a submariner so it gave him something to do on those long voyages underwater.

Yes, I think that he said it had taken four years so far.
There were many more models which I didn't get to photograph - some so tiny they needed a jeweller's loupe to view the detail.

That's a shame about the amount of pictures, I think those ships would have made a great subject! However, you can never go wrong with good conversation... rare these days.
